Nik,

What type of camera did you use? How did you mount it on the
wings/fuselage/towplane? What effect on the glider's
performance/handling did it have? I would like to make some soaring
videos myself. Thanks for any input. No problems downloading!

Nice job, I enjoyed the video on this cold, rainy, winter day.

Ok on the wingmounted shots I used a JVC mini dv camera, I used 3 inch
wide tape installed from the trailing edge going up to the leading
edge, which made it pretty aerodynamicall, I didn't feel any big
performance looses or noted any different flying characteristics, but
then again those were schweizer aircraft which aren't exactly high
performance...
For the fuseshots we just taped a small digital camera to the
horizontal stabilizer...

Hope that helps...

Nik,

Congrats on your excellent video. We as a sport need much more of this
sort of thing. This video relates the sport to the younger generations
in a way that we can really identify with. I'm just a little older
than you guys, but I'm used to being the youngest guy around the
airport. The video allows a glimpse into how much fun the sport is,
and may inspire more of our contemporaries to put down thier video game
controllers at least long enough to put forth the effort to learn
enough about soaring to really see how much fun it is.This video should
be distributed to every High School and College that has any connection
with, or is anywhere near a gliderport. I'll look for next years
videos. Please post more if you have them, and let us know if you'll
ever be in the Reno/Minden area. We'll catch a few flights. Keep up
the good work.

Excellent video, thank you for making it, but there's only one error:
it ends with "The End" where I expected it to say "The Beginning".

I look forward to the next one!

Tape? What was your what was your highest airspeed? I've wanted to do
this too but I never would have tried tape. Glad it worked for you.
Very enjoyable to watch.

I've used tape to hold a bullet camera mounted on a
post with an aluminum plate for a base - up to 150
kts. People recommend gaffer's tape though I found
wing tape works fine.

Okay, it was a lot of tape.

Thanks for the comments guys...

I used normal packaging tape (Not the cheap stuff though) It worked
without any problems at all! Highest speed was 80 mph...

I've done it with duct tape and had no problems whotsoever, even at
higher speeds.

The professionals use "Duck Tape" brand duct tape for it's superior
aerodynamic qualities.

Sorry, couldn't resist, and it is an actual brand available in the US.

Mediaplayer says it's the same 9:27 time as the video at the link you
posted in your first article with this subject line.

Your server is just slow in streaming the file, so playback is halted
periodically.

More than that. I've seen "Duck Tape" as a description in hardware
stores applying to stock clearly labelled "Duct Tape".

Actually, the "k" generally seems to be taking over from the "t".

Ok, the Draft.wmv was around 5 min and it is around 5 min longer
(10min)
Also I don't know what you mean by slow server, I download it at full
speed with no problems, maybe your connection is just too slow because
the file is 2mbits and not optimized for dsl which is (768kbps)

Excellent idea. Another way to attract young people, IMHO, is to buy
them Condor, the soaring flight simulator. Only $50 US. It is a very
realistic soaring simulator, the best I've seen. The younger set seems
to like video games, which this is although it is so much more. Once
they're hooked they may well want to try the real thing. Heck, buy it
for yourself. Warning: It is addictive, especially the online
real-time competitions, and one can easily lose hours of spare time.
Guess how I know? ;-)

p.s., Don't be put off by the lack of a demo program, as I was.

-Doug

Another style more widely used in the entertainment/movie industry is
called Cloth Backed Gaffers Tape. It features a strong cloth backing,
not plastic and a better adhesive. It will not turn to mush and leave
gobs of hard to clean off adhesive all over your finish. Its available
in a number of colors including a few flourescent ones.

But , you can't find it at your hardware store , or Walmart and its 2-3
times more expensive than a good quality pro level gaff tape.

I had no idea there was really was a product called "gaffers tape", and
I'm amazed at the difference between it and duct tape. Try

http://tapeinfo.com/TapeInfo/Datasheets/3M/1204/6910.aspx
http://tapeinfo.com/TapeInfo/Datasheets/3M/1203/3903.aspx

Summary for gaffer vs. duct: twice the thickness, twice the adhesion,
three times the tensile strength! And a Permacel type with 4 times the
adhesion - yikes, there goes the gel coat!

Yep, Eric,

As a longtime professional in the film/video production business, I can tell you that gaffer’s tape is the “goooooood” stuff.  Been using it for years.   The brand that for years has been the staple in the production business is Permacel.  It is usually available from film and video equipment rental houses, etc.

Although it has really good adhesion, if pulled slowly it really comes off most surfaces easily and with no residue.  I wouldn’t personally hesitate to put it on gelcoat.  It would definitely be my tape of choice for holding stuff on a wing.  Now let me see… where did I put those spare winglets?????
