Yesterday, Marian Nowak flew his homebuilt sailplane over 1,000 km at
Ridge Soaring Gliderport Is this a first?

The story about his amazing glider was featured in a recent issue of
"Gliding International."

Bob Fitch did this about 25 - 30 years ago with his HP-18.

Tom,

I'm surprised that you don't remember Bob's HP-18 flight. You were there.

I would assume that Tom meant the first not-from-a-kit homebuilt to fly 1000km

Christopher,

I think Tom simply forgot.

I'm sure Tom would agree that any glider that is classified on its'
Airworthiness Certificate as Homebuilt by the FAA is eligible to compete for
homebuilt firsts/records.

Remember that building the homebuilt glider kits of yesteryear required more
skill and investment of time than today's metal kits with their stack of
parts that are formed by computer driven lathes/drill presses/milling
machines and pre-drilled wing skins.

Now look at today's potential composite kits and what Bob Kuykendall and
Brad Hill have accomplished.
http://www.hpaircraft.com/hp-24/
Do you really think that gliders built using Bob's molds subsequent to
Brad's shouldn't be considered homebuilt?

BTW, Dick Schreder was not an Aeronautical Engineer. He was a Civil
Engineer.

I didn't mean to take anything away from Marian's accomplishment, but
Bob's was absolutely epic. US diplome #15 and way before GPS and
google earth. The game has changed a lot. Bob did it the hard way
and deserves to be remembered for it. I still recall the bumper
sticker on his van: "Old age and treachery will triumph over youth
and skill!"

Marian designed his glider from scratch and he build his glider
himself. It is a composite glider. Marian then flew 1000 km in it!

I am not sure if anything else can be more epic!

Both flights mentioned in this thread are noteworthy and inspiring. Lest
we forget, there are many "epic" flights to be had. While not
necessarily of the world or national record breaking variety, each one
of us has the opportunity for "epic" flights as we try to do what we
have only dreamed about...even if it's a seemingly small achievement to
others.

The beauty of the sport of soaring is that we have the opportunity to
challenge ourselves and do things we may have not thought possible
before...no matter what the era or technology is being considered.

My current (albeit done "back in the day"...1984-ish) "epic" flight was
just shy of 190sm as a gold distance attempt in an SGS 1-34...I failed
to get a proper barogram "notch" so the claim was denied. I look forward
to many more epic flights in the years to come!

Right now a homebuilt sailplane is leading the standings for R8 on the
OLC, except we all know the OLC is for wussies.

Marian designed his "Egret" and built every part from scratch. He
likes to say - "$10,000 and 10,000 hours".... It is as beautiful up
close as it is in the photos and h flies it masterfully.

I can believe the 10,000 hours part for sure. Did he build it with
negative molds? What is it made of.......fiberglass or carbon,
or........

The span seems greater than 15m, is it?

well, I would very much like to get in touch with Mr Nowak to talk
about sailplane design and building, this is a remarkable achievement,
similar to our HP/Tetra-15 project. I am in awe...............

..and, if I may add to my previous post concerning personal epic
flights...

It is inspiring to see the epic accomplishments and achievements of
others.

Thank you to all who post their recorded flights on OLC for others to
view, learn from, and dream about. And a thank you to those who share
your stories and pictures of design, development, and construction of
beautiful soaring machines.
