I'll be probably spending some time in France near Grenoble during next
month.

Any airports/gliding sites nearby? What type of aircraft do they offer,
necessary paperwork etc?

Any type of information is very welcome, especially links and e-mails.

Thanks,

M.

Nearest gliderport to Grenoble is Le Versoud, they have a web site
http://grenoble.volavoile.org/. They have 3 ASK13, 1 Twin II Acro,
1 Janus C, 1 K8, 2 K6, 1 Astir Jean, 3 Pegases, 1 LS7WL.

Hello,

You'd better go to Challes : http://www.csvva.org/ (45 min North to
Grenoble)

The other large gliging operation is Challes-les-Eaux, about 50km from
Grenoble towards Geneva http://www.csvva.org
They have anything you'd like to fly, from ASK13 to ASH25.

If you want to be sure to have good weather, you better go 150km to the
south from Grenoble to the Southern side of the Alps. Places to go would be
Sisteron, Gap (not sure if they have a big club fleet) or la Motte du Caire
(winch launch only, fleet is 2xASW13, Ka6e, Pégase).

Necessary paper work depends on where you come from.

Sisteron failed to honor my reservation to fly with them last year, made
early and confirmed close to the date I arrived. They did offer me a flight
for the next day, however. If time is short and you are constrained by
other commitments, I'd look elsewhere.

Mark

Having read all the other posts, I would reccomend
going to Serre, their you can have a dual ride with
Klaus ( Ive done 3018ks) Hohlmann. He does a lead and
follow course through the Alps, certainly reccomend
taking a cushion as the Callif is not the most comfortable
to fly.

Serre is aprox 30-40 mins from Grenoble due south (ish)

The morning briefings are excellent and de brief the
previous day as well as give out what to expect for
the day.

No ! Go by train (42 minutes Grenoble - Chambéry). Then city bus is available
from train station
up to aerodrome.

30 to 40 minutes by plane... Not by road or rail...

What no one mentionned is the weather. Are the Alps flyable in March? Are all
the gliderports mentionned operating in the winter?

Cheers, Charles

March is a very good month in the French Alps. Lots of north-European
pilots go there in marts to kick of the season. I’d be surprised
if you can find a site that will take you on such short notice!

Cheers, Jan

Depending on where "near Grenoble" is, and on the available time frame :

If you can go to the Southern Alps (Serres, Sisteron, ...) you'll find
better weather at this time of the year.

Now if you can't go too far away, then I'd go to Challes, they mainly use
winch tow to get to the nearest ridge + they have all the facilities you may
need (rooms + restaurant on the airfield). : http://www.csvva.org

If you want to fly in Grenoble, then Le Versoud is the place.
http://grenoble.volavoile.org/
No winch here, but a tow plane.

And by road you have to go through a pass, the Col de la Croix-Haute,
at height 1176m, which may be closed due to snow in this season.
I hope it will not be the case next week-end when I go there.

This should not be a surprise, the French are not known for honoring
their reservations or OBLIGATIONS to their customers or ALLIES. And
don't get involved in any kind of accident where they - the French -
might have to be held accountable for their actions when they can
blame someone else. Ask the British soaring group about the midair
with the skydiver while flying from a French soaring operation. The
French courts are very fair in these matters. So, if you go their I
hope you have deep pockets and others you can depend on should you get
in any type of trouble of need assistance that you would expect from
any of your other friends or ALLIES.

Good grief! Someone blows one reservation and you trash the country!
Couldn't possibly happen at a US gliderport. Right? Right! Get a life!

Excuse me Ray, but is there supposed to be something wrong with
trashing the French? I have always assumed that trashing the French
was a God given right and obligation of English speaking Americans,
British and Canadians. I have always thought it was possible to have
a life and still trash the French. It's called multitasking, I
believe. "Expect the French to help us kick Saddam Hussein out of
Iraq? Hell, they didn't even help us kick the Germans out of France."

What I expected one Frenchman to do was honor my reservation to fly. My
post was intended to advise caution relative to one soaring site to those
who might follow. As to kicking the Germans out of France, Frenchmen
(granted not all Frenchmen) fought with us in two world wars.

BTW, how many here remember how we helped the French relieve the siege of
Dien Bien Fu and kick the communists out of Indochina? Me neither. The
FRANCO-American disagreement on the issue of Iraq is, so far, a quarrel
among friends. It would be nice to keep it that way.
