Hi,

I just bought a sailplane with a Sage Vario which appeared to be broke
(indicating 300 up). Is it worth refurbing, or would it make sense to just
get a new winter ($400).

thanks,

mike

First try to center (zero) the needle by
taking out the center plug in the glass face
and turning the screw in the direction you
want the move the needle
Second keep the Sage and have it reworked
by Pete Russell at Minden who now owns
the company - the Sage is a very good vario
so keep it.

The Sage is the best mechanical vario I have ever used. And I've used a
few.If you can't zero it as described, get it fixed by Pete Russell and
keep it !!!

Before sending it in for a rebuild, I suggest taking the rubber gromet out from
the center of the glass face of the instrument. Then, with a jewlers
screwdriver, adjust the brass screw so that the needle is "zeroed". This might
be all you need to do. If you have another vario, or with a stop watch and
your altimeter, you can get a good idea if the instrument is measuring a
correct climb or descent rate. The Sage is an EXCELLENT instrument. I
wouldn't trade it for 10 Winter varios. The Winter is much too slow compared
to the Sage. Once you get accustomed to a Sage, you will never want any other
mechanical vario.

Awhile back, someone mentioned a chemical (can't remember the name),
available at nurseries, that will gel urine. Would someone please repost
this info?

I have a Sage CVA that came with my ship. I have a Schumann box that still
works attached. I threw out the Winter and the Rico. The Cambridge is there
for confirmation and final glide. If I want to KNOW something about the air
around me, I use the Sage. I would say that if you consider the importance
of your mechanical vario, a dollar for dollar comparison is no good. A 400
dollar Winter is not worth a $600 repaired Sage. No bullshit.
