Oxygen system in ASW-27 ASG-29

Recently acquired an ASG-29 (ASW-27-18)and unable to mount O2 regulator on bottle behind seat back. Not enough room with seat back in aft position. How have other 27/29 owners solved this problem? Flex high pressure line? If so, where was it purchased?

Mine fits great right on the bottle. MH system. In both a 27 and a 29. Do you have the right bottle?

We do have the correct O2 bottle. Did not want to cut seat back.

I am a dealer for Mountain High Equipment and have installed several ASW-27 systems. Contact me at: info (at) mmfabrication )dot) com if you don't get the information you need from RAS.

The ASW-27/29 will only accept a steel cylinder of a particular size, and the regulator mounts at a 90 degree angle to the cylinder. It usually has sufficient clearance to the seatback (if the regulator is angled slightly outboard). The interference is usually the large cast aluminum handle that opens the valve on the cylinder. Either remove the retaining screw on the handle and only use it to open and close the cylinder valve before and after flight (use a string to keep it attached so you don't lose it) or make a simple one-wing handle that will not interfere with the seat back. What is your serial number? I have 29004. It has a euro bottle size and I still have not been able to get one that fits (from all the usual suspects). I have to use a small Mountain High Bottle and fill every day. Ugg.

Stupid Question - Is the bottle all the way
in?

There's a housing to hold the bottom of
the bottle, but the bottom tends to miss
leaving the bottle a couple inches farther
out than it should be.

Contact John Murray at Eastern Sailplane. As the former Schleicher dealer for many years he has both the experience and the O2 bottles to help you. Take a D steel cylinder, but not every D cylinder will work. John measures the cylinders and keeps the ones that work. MH has a Kevlar cylinder Which is smaller than the allotted space, which will work when wrapped with foam or vacuumed packed survival kit and is much lighter than the steel, but a bit small for western flying.

I got my D bottles from Eastern. I use MH and you can use a remote gauge and regulator (Via Braided SS) or make sure the gauge and regulator are vertical and if it is turned just right it will fit where the lip is molded in the seat back. I have also seen people grind out a small section of the seat back to make it fit.

You might also look at the Spiracle DD-lite bottle. It's a full carbon fiber wrap 3000 psi rated bottle that is 4 lbs, about 12.5 inches (no valve) long and 5.38 inches diameter, and threaded for standard CGA-540 valve. I used to sell them, but with the last recession stopped doing so. They are available on-line for less than $500 and are popular for rescue work. They typically come with a post style valve, but some suppliers will lower the price a little and sell just the bottle. You will then need to buy a mini CGA-540 valve etc. from Mountain High or another supplier.

Advantage of this bottle is it is very light, shorter than most, so if your available space will handle the somewhat larger diameter, this bottle often nets the most capacity if the space is length limited. The DD-lite holds 557 liters at 2216 psi - - the bottle is rated for 3000 psi and holds 748 liters at that pressure (but you'll need to fill with a O2 boost pump in the USA as the typical glider FBO only has bottle manifold so fills are mostly lower than 2200 psi, though it's good to know the bottle is super strong - just don't drop it.

I got a high pressure line from Paule Remde / Cumulus Soaring and mounted the regulator on the left side of the cockpit aft of the trim slide. The HP line is held in place with "P" shaped small hose clamps that are placed at the seat pan screw holes. The regulator (a small AvOx) is held down with heavy cable ties connected to the same hose clamps.

In New England we only use O2 in the fall season - and this system is easily installed and removed.

Mine fits with a MH regulator in all seatback positions. For reference, the restraining strap in within an inch of the top curve of the bottle. (It rests on the flat part of the cylinder but is very close to the transition point.)

I bought a steel bottle from Schleicher and a brass adapter from Mountain
High to use their normal USA style regulator. That way you can refill the
bottle easily too. It fits with the seatback at full back (just!)
We have that setup in an ASW28 and an ASG29.
