But we are also considering the DG 1000. Is there someone out there who has
extensive flight experience on both of these models and can compare the flight
characteristics?

The Duo Discus is already a well proven concept.
Like you said, it's already a perfect glider.
For a flight comparison you can read the article on the DG web site:
http://www.dg-flugzeugbau.de/vergleich-duo-e.html
The performance data shown over there are a little in favor for the
DG-1000. (BTW did you expect a different outcome?)
Personally I think that a comparison with a Duo Discus with internal
seals in the ailerons would give an other outcome.
(Currently the Duo has mylar gap seals only. Through these seals there
still is a minor air leak, which has a performance decreasing effect.
Installing internal seals in the ailerons will stop this air leak and
will improve the performance and handling)
The DG-1000 recently ran into a few problems during the certification
process.
For details see: http://www.dg-flugzeugbau.de/dg1000-flattern-e.htmll
This could mean that the production version of the DG-1000 has higher
aileron forces than the Duo.
An other way to compare both gliders is looking at contest results.
The Germans have a "Doppelsitzerklasse" national contest.
For details see:
http://www.flugplatz-oerlinghausen.de/upload/dm2002/ergebnisse.html
The DG-1000 is certainly an excellent glider is you want a multi
purpose two seater. The comfort of the landing gear is certainly much
better than the Duo, but the tail will be very heavy to lift if you
install the tail dolly.
I think that if your club wants to use a high performance two seater
primarily for x-country and contest flying , you're better off with a
Duo.
If you want a two seater that can also be used for aerobatics and
training flights, go for the DG-1000.
Currently a lot of Duo pilots are upgrading to a turbo version. There
are several pure glider Duo's for sale on the second hand market.
Succes with your choice.
According to DG web page, the next delivery slot available for a DG1000 is
fall 2004

I think that kue...@aol.com (Kuehnr) lives in Germany, so he does not
have to drive all the way to Florida ;-)

OK, It's nice to know so you can have a DG1000 much sooner than a
Duo Discus.
