Anyone had any experience with the Zeus? Please share your opinions on its quality and performance.

Hi,

I just received my LX Zeus 5.5 demo for use at the SSA Convention. I
haven't played with it much yet, but would be glad to answer any questions
you may have. I'll be putting together an overview video on it soon.

Airspace is a pain in pre-zeus instrument, 5000, 7000...

The Zeus uses .cub airspace files and .cup waypoint files.

Generally speaking, the LX9000 is considered to be the top of the line so how does the Zeus compare to the LX9000? Granted, the Zeus offers synthetic vision but I see this feature as an invitation to get into serious trouble. Paul, do you consider the Zeus as a generation step-up above the LX9000?

I'm not Paul, but let me try: the Zeus is LX Navigation's attempt to imitate LXNAV's competing product LX9000. LX Navigation's advertisement does not name a single feature that would make the Zeus appear more powerful than the LX9000, therefore I don't believe it's a generation step-up, more like catch-up.

(I've never seen a Zeus a.k.a. Kanardia Nesis in real-life, all I know is what I've read on LX Navigation's web site.)

The Zeus is a result of the management split in LX.
Now you have
The original LX Navigation
- Crtomir Rojnik and company with outsourced development by Kanardia
- Colibri, up to LX7007 and Zeus
and
The new scion LX-Nav
- Erazem Polutnic and company - internal development
- LX8080, 9000 , V5 and up varios.

Post LX 7007 they have diverged sharing rights to some platforms.
The Zeus is an upgrade of the 7007, so is technically a peer of the
LX8080 and LX9000 (same funcationality in two physical formats.)
Both good products - I feel the technical edge is in LX-NAV platform.
But that is for my personal preferences not an absolute view...

Either way it is probably more than you need, but then I am a luddite
with a LX20 + colibri + mk1 eyeball system. Won't be winning any
competitions with that hardware - so a LX8080 is in the budget approval
cycle with the wife.
Still won't be winning any contests, but the toys will be more capable.

My next glider, a Phoenix U15, will have 3D fight terrain display, but
I'm pretty sure that's going to be useful (at best) only in "airplane
mode". I'm open to suggestions, as the glass panel burns a lot of amps,
so it'd be nifty if it had some value while soaring.

I'm sorry, but I don't know yet. I haven't played with the Zeus yet. I
will very soon. The manual is very impressive. It seems to have many/most
of the features of the LX9000 that I fly with. I'll try to get a video
overview done soon.

Glad to see there's still a sense of humor (humour?) out there!

I've flown too many to count instrument approaches to minimums in
single-engine jets at night, in raging snow storms, covered with ice, up
hill, both ways, with round steam gauges and no auto pilot to need a glass
cockpit. Having said that I've recently acquired my first "smart phone" and
am struggling to avoid being sucked into the dark side of text messaging...
And I still refuse to enter the world of Twitter.

The LX9000 has the enormous advantage that the software has been around for long enough to have been fairly well de-bugged (I have one and love it). Early adopters of the LX8000 had problems. If I was looking for something new now, the Zeus would have to offer significant feature benefits for me to consider being an early adopter.

That pic of an LX9000 with synthetic vision (3D) view of the hills has been on the LX Nav website for quite a time, but with no mention of the feature in the text.

Personally, I would not go for an LX8080. One of the biggest benefits of the 9000 is the large display - if I could not have a large display on the flight computer I would have a good vario (LX Nav V80/Butterfly/Clearnav) and an Oudie.

My avionics shop has just installed the Zeus 2.8 in the front and back seat of my twin glider. I have bench checked it extensively and will be flying it within the week. Full report to follow.

I would expect the Zeus to be great. But personally I feel wary of
cutting a large hole in my instrument panel for any specific
instrument until standard cut-out sizes become accepted. For this
reason, I prefer a gooseneck mounted display for my moving map.
This approach enabled me to change from a Compaq to an Oudie
with very little work.

Andrew. I totally agree about cutting up one's panel. The Zeus 2.8 fits in a 80mm cutout. I replaced my GPS-NAV/LX-NAV/57mm Cambridge vario with the smaller Zeus and associated vario, with one 57mm left over to accomodate a transponder. I was concerned that the small display would be too small, but really it is no different than the LX7007/5000/4000 which I previously flew with since the mid 90s
(except that my eyes are quite a bit older now).
