Glideport has been a crewless ghost ship for a while. Bound to break
some time.
The question is, will the SSA keep thinking of it as it's tracking
thing, or will the SSA join OGN like the rest of the world. The SSA
could set up a wrapper around the OGN data to enhance the spectating of
US contests, like they did with Glideport. E.g., create
contest-specific links, and show the task. There are many OGN viewer
sites out there to serve as examples, and some may be using open source.
Lacking official support from the SSA, we pilots can still sign up our
SPOT/Inreach devices with Davis Chappins' bridge to OGN, and/or use the
IGCdroid cellphone-based tracking app which now also offers to send the
data to OGN. Then choose your favorite OGN viewer to see the data.
There are many. Alas they all seem to blank out the data after a few
hours at most. European privacy rules. An SSA-dedicated site that will
only show flights in the USA can go ahead and keep the data for longer.
After all, this tracking is all opt-in based.
All that is before we even talk about adding ground stations that
forward FLARM signals to the OGN, as is done in Europe. How to best
handle privacy there I am not sure. It can be opt-out based, i.e.,
respecting the "do not track" setting in FLARM if set. If just the
FLARM "stealth" mode is set, should the data still be shown, but without
identifying the specific glider or pilot?
