This post is for U.K. pilots who fly from B.G.A. clubs.

In the October edition of Sailplane & Gliding there is an advertisment for a
National Coach to provide principally instructor training.

I understand that this is the post at present held by Dave Bullock, and that
he is being invited to apply.

Dave Bullock has held the post for several years, I think five; the
advertisment is for a one year post.

There is a second National Coach, Simon Adlard, he provides principally
cross-country training. He has been in post for I think four years, I have
heard that the BGA powers that be have decided that his post will be
advertised next year, when he has done five years.

Has the BGA gone mad? There is an old saying, "If it ain't broke, why
fix it?".

I have been in U.K. gliding for 39 years now, and in that time I have met
most of the coaches, perhaps all of them. I have first hand knowledge of
the present coaches, as people and as coaches. In my opinion the present
coaches are doing the jobs they are hired for at least as well, and quite
probably better than they have ever been done before. In particular, they
work very well together, and when training instructors there is complete
harmony and inter-changeability between them.

The present action is thoroughly de-motivating for both coaches, and anyone
applying for the post will realise that they should simply think of it as a
short term experience. The BGA's record as an employer of coaches is not
good, I can think of three past coaches who have been treated badly.

It would serve the BGA right if Dave does not apply, they do not find
someone else suitable, and Simon also looks for another job. I hope this
does not happen, because the present team (which it is) is so good.

I can find no explanation in S. & G. (or anywhere else) for the present
action.

Will anyone else who is able to comment from first hand experience please do
so.

This sits very comfortably with the new dictate from the BGA that all solo
glider pilots must have an NPPL type medical release................

I had the pleasure of attending my ass cat course with Dave Bullock. As an
ex school teacher I am able to appreciate the amount of work which went into
the organisation and delivery of the course. If the BGA cannot see the value
of such a professional maybe we should look closer at the people who make
these decisions and question their suitability for their posts. Short term
contracts destroy enthusiasm and are short term in their outlook.
