It falls over with an immediate null reference exception on Windows XP
SP2 on my ThinkPad. Anybody want the stack trace? email me.

I've got Google Earth 4.2 and the .NET 3.0 Framework with the very
latest updates. When you say the current .NET exactly what version and
update are you running against? On what OS platform? I'm on XP SP2 at
the very latest public release updates.
Anybody else got this to run?

I see it's in early beta release (version 0.2). I hope future releases
will smooth the heading (it jumps while turning/thermaling), and maybe
add a PDA imitation in the left panel showing the overhead macro view.
And maybe some bored programmer out there can do a version that
integrates with SeeYou, to do synchronized playback. That would look
pretty cool on my two-headed lean mean XP machine!

I did a Google search
for
V2.0.50727 and went to the
Microsoft .NET Framework Version 2.0 Redistributable Package (x86)
page.
I downloaded the 2.0 version and installed it and the program then ran
even though my system was showing up to date on system checks.

Thanks this is one of the best additions for Google Earth and
soaring. I look forward to the fine tuning to add bank angle to the
turns and higher replay speed. At 10x my October 3rd ridge flight
still takes nearly and hour to watch. It was by far the closest I can
let anyone see what I see in flight.

It's a wonderful tool. I love it. Tobi you deserve a huge round of
applause for this.
However, I have noticed that while my Volkslogger files work fine, some IGC
files from OLC won't play. This may be what is causing problems for others.
There's an error message in German but I can't cut and paste it into
babelfish.

I don't think that it needs bank angle - it isn't a
flight simulator with an instrument panel in the screen
and the horizontal view of the scenery when turning
is fine.
However, similarly to what Bill says, most of my IGC
files won't play and I get what is probably the same
error message in German saying something about 'Vermuthlich
keine igc-Datei'. What does that signify?

Usually the .NET packages are shown as optional packages, so the automated
checking won't load them.
Mine works fine on a Lenovo (post ThinkPad type of laptop). Don't
understand the comments about jerkiness in the thermals, it's about
as smooth as you can reasonably expect. I use 4 second gps updates,
longer times probably look a lot worse.
The only funny item I've seen is the two demo files that came with the
software won't run, they error out immediately. Anybody else see that?
Other than that, great job, it's a lot of fun.

there is a new Build on the download page. It should solve any trouble
with unreadable igc-files (It's hard for me to test, since local
culture settings caused the problems, thanks to Mark for assistance)

The new build fixed the unreadable file problem I was seeing. Worked
fine yesterday. But this morning, the perspective view from GE is
many thousands of feet too high. Both the GE eye altitude, and the
height in meters in the lower left are correct, but the view is wrong.
Using XP, SP2, .NET 1.1, 2.0, and 3.0 loaded. Rebooting didn't fix.

exaggeration under tools-options-3D is not set to 1.

the onlinecontest.org website. Look for Tim Taylor under the Competitors
tab, then select the 2007 option under the 2008 tab. Tim's Oct 3 flight is
listed there because it was part of the 2007 competition. Click on the "i"
(information) button, then select the .igc file for downloading, and follow
the on-screen instructions to save the file to your computer. Replaying this
file puts you right in Tim's cockpit, up close and personal with those
awsome Utah mountains!

That has happened on one file so far. It was a flight where my 302A
was having intermittent glitches due to a faulty antenna connection.
Probably not your problem though, but I wonder if the recording
interval of the GPS could cause a problem?

really excellent tool.
One tip for users - if you haven't already discovered
it - if the terrain ahead seems slow to load then dip
the view downwards momentarily and back up and it loads
immediately.
Thinking of it as a flight terrain viewer rather than
a flight simulator three things would enhance it for
me:
A side map showing current location.
The ability scan scan left/right and up/down while
paused.
An option to automatically jump the display to miss
out thermals except for, say, the first and last turns.

what you described appears in GE 4.0, thats the reasing why 4.2 is a
requisite. Even in 4.2 , if you are very close to the terrain, lets
say less than 40 fts, the Google Earth Camera sometimes makes
avoidance movements which cannot be eliminated. However as a totally
convinced user of GPS_LOG all my logs work fine.

Opened IGC GE and then opened the file with SeeYou file in Route mode
and "futzed" with the replay speeds to get everything synced and then
let them run. Had to continuosly sync using the GE time control but
that was easy. The 2 applications kept time drifting, Google seems to
have some small realtime issues.
Worked like a charm though and is a great tool for learning the
terrain in a area. I am headed for Sondrio in March and this helps me
to learn the extended local terrain. I downloaded IGC files from the
OLC for the Sondrio area. With SeeYou, GE and a chart I am statring to
familarize myself with the area, including the "hot" thermal spots!

Thanks for the directions and kind words. For those interested in
flying the ridge and wave north or Salt Lake City, Utah I would
recommend looking at flights on OLC from:
December 15th, 2006 This was a flight that shows the speed potential
of the ridge. I actually flew it conservatively and without water. A
write up can be found in the UTSoar group on Yahoo Groups.
The October 3rd, 2007 flight for the full extent of the ridge.
November 17th, 2007 flight of three gliders on ridge and wave to
17,999 feet. (Fun to watch in programs that let you put multiple
flights on same trace)
Also you can search the 2007 flights of Lynn Alley for several flights
in the wave.
Again thank to Tobias for providing such a great program that allow
others to really get a better idea of the terrain. It is immensely
helpful in sites where mountain flying is common.

thanks for the kind comments. There is an upgrade available ( full
time control, realtime drift eliminate for those who want to synch
with seeyou and more). Probably there will be further upgrades during
the winter, but not in spring and summer at all. You may take a fast
look from the Help-Menu.

You can convert the *.gdb files to *.igc files with g7towin.exe. A
web search should find the source.

Tobias found the problem with his code and .NET strangeness on my
laptop, seems like it may have affect some other laptops as well.
Anyhow it is all working great on my ThinkPad now.

There was an update recently, it at least fixed a .NET startup
problems on some laptops where the application would crash as I
described earlier. I am guessing that is very unlikely to be related
to any other problems - except Tobias told me that the left hand
control panel may size wrong on laptop displays but can just be
changed manually. I have no idea what other things if any changed. Why
don't you try the latest build anyhow and then email him a description
of the strangeness you are seeing. He is very responsive.

You've done a fabulous job with the latest version! I really like the
addition of the path, the imperial units and the figure.
One small problem I've noticed - the path sometimes disappears
immediately in front of the glider, for a distance of several hundred
meters. Then it reappears just in front of the glider again.
