Go to FAA.GOV and go to AD proposals.

There is an AD there for L33 owners to get the spar pins replaced otherwise
it could fold up around your ears.

Thought L33 owners might want a heads up on this one

Thanks again Al.
Fortunately the upgrade doesn't appear necessary until the Solo has 1500
hours.
By then I expect my ears will have fallen off.
Even MORE fortunately, I was told the L-33 I fly has already had the
upgrade <g>.
Now...if we can just get the Solo up to the airfield...
It's a sweet ship to fly.

Dear Al and Sean, and others interested,

This proposed AD is old news. L33 owners have known about it for a year
already. No one's wings
will "fold up around your ears". If you study the FAA document in fact,
there is no urgency to the
repair whatsoever - it's merely a procedure to extend the service life of
the L33 from the original
1,500 hours (note: how many glider pilots ever put 1,500 hours on their
glider - in how many years
- twenty - if ever?), nevertheless, LET factory has developed the modified
main wing attachment and
wing spar root pins to increase service life to the projected 9,000 hours!

The LET factory, famous for the longevity of its metal gliders like the
L-13 Blanik, is going the
extra mile to make sure the L33 Solo will also last forever. The FAA is
recommending the
replacement of the main wing attachment and wing spar root pins, to keep in
line with the Czech
Airworthiness Authority by issuing the A.D.

Notice that the FAA's proposal allows an additional 100 hours if the glider
will have already
reached 1,500 hours by the time the A.D. will have been published.

If the wing mounts on the older models L33 were deemed unsafe the way they
are now, the FAA would
issue an immediate stop of operations until the modification was
accomplished. (All L33s made after
serial number 960410 already have the modification built in.) For the older
models, LET has
developed the L33/008a modification kit. By allowing the 1,500+ hours, the
FAA endorses the safe
service life during that period of operation.

Sincerely,

BLANIK AMERICA, INC.

Ok my fault for reading the FAA article word for word!!

Anyway no harm in knowing the AD is out there and the factory will certify
it beyond 1500 hours.

Just talked with Vitek..at Blanik..my L-33 is one which was on the "list"...he
assures me that I don't have to worry until we hit 1500 hrs...the AD was not
due to any actual flight failure...just a test condition for wear after long
term use....whew...I felt better after flying in rough air over the
weekend....kept watchin' to make sure the wings stayed on!!!!

to quote the FAA
"This condition, if not corrected in a timely manner, could result in the
wing separating from the sailplane with consequent loss of control."

Therefore always check your wings are still on and firmly attatched before
flight!!
