Thinking of crewing with a friend in the upcoming Club Class contest at
Moriarty.  He's asked me to help him find a Club Class glider to beg,
borrow, rent, or steal and I don't know what gliders are acceptable for
that class.  I would think such gliders as the Libelle, PW-4, LS-4,
Mosquito, etc. would fit the bill, but I couldn't find a list of the
acceptable gliders.

Could anybody provide a list or a source to check out?

The SSA handicap list includes attributes applicable to each listed glider. Any glider with a C attribute is usable in the US Club Class. Simply described they are 15M span gliders with a handicap of .98(Std Libelle) to around .89(LS-6).

Thanks!  I sent the document to my friend. Amazing what is included in
that list!

Dan,
Nixon method is better. I failed to remember where the Club ships were listed.
Sailplane Racing
Other Resources
Sports Class Handicaps

Letter C under notes = Club Class

Notes key is at bottom of handicap list.

Hank,

Would you like to clarify a bit, please? The Std Libelle is 1.02. The Club Libelle is 1.06 and also has the "C" designation. Highest performing (lowest US Handicap number) with the "C" is the LS6C 15 meter at .898.

So, what is the lower limit on performance? I see the Phoebus A and B at 1.025 and 1.045, but no "C" designation. Again, the Club Libelle at 1.06 has the "C"

Also, 15 meter is the max span. You can go shorter span, if you can get the performance in range. There is one 13 meter with a 1.0 HC that has the "C" designation. Silent 2A. And the MiniLak at 13.5 meter span and .958 HC.

Then there is the "no motors" limit. Except currently for the DG-400-15 and various DG800 motorgliders in 15 meter tips. And some 15 meter Schemp-Hirth Turbo gliders.

But, not a DG-800S with 15 meter tips, even though it is in the handicap range. And the HP-24.

Yes, the list needs a little combing, like a former President's hair after being out in a windstorm. I have offered to provide the information in the past. Give me the HC range and limitations, and I will be happy to correct the spreadsheet. I will also move for deletion of some things, like the 17 Meter Sagitta (sadly, now destroyed), the Diamant 22 (concept of, I think, Danny Pierson but never built) BS1b (concept never built). There are more. My favorite is the ASW-17 in 15 meter trim. Man, to have had one of those at Mifflin a few years back when the tasks turned out to be nothing but high speed ridge running on otherwise iffy days!

There may be ships that could fly in Club but are not listed simply because they are outside the specified range. The 3 ships you mentioned could fly in Club but they don't get handicap adjusted beyond 1.02. The current rules do not preclude ships with motors.
I was replying from memory re the low numerical limit. The end of the range is the LS-6 which was chosen to allow ASW-20, first generation Ventus variants, and LS-6.
The handicap list gets tuned as we find stuff that needs fixing. That generally does not mean whining about handicaps. In 20 years or so I have yet o get a message that says "my handicap is too favorable"

Imagine that, the mighty LS-6 in the club class! Mine was flown to
victory in the 1985 World Championships (not me) and two successive
owners crashed it.  One fatally.  It was rebuilt after both crashes and
someone on this list now owns it.  I would love to see it back in the
air, Steve.  I might even travel to Kansas if offered the chance to fly
it once more! 😂

Hank,

There is no span limit specified in the FAI rules and the 16m Standard Cirrus B is specifically allowed on the FAI list. Of the compromises that we allow to maximize participation (ie: gliders with motors, including Standard Class(!) gliders), it is odd that we impose a span limitation.

All the best,
Daniel

(PS: Let the Kestrel fly!)

Hank and RC,

I second Daniel's comment (see above). Please let the Cirrus (17.7m) fly in Club Class. The performance falls right in line with this racing class and is less than a flapped ASW20 (allowed under FAI rules) or Discus2b (allowed under US Rules Only). The cost of entry into a Cirrus is ~$15-18k... it's perfectly matched with other Club Class ships. There are a lot of other cogent arguments in favor of allowing the Cirrus or Kestrel in this Class and I'd site Philip Chidekel's previous comments to the Contest RC re: additions of the Kestrel and Cirrus to Club Class as they're exhaustive, reasoned, and well thought out.

Respectfully,
Chris Schrader

Note: In full disclosure, and for all readers to see, I fly a club owned Open Cirrus (N77CN) and would someday, sooner rather than later, like to fly in the Club Class Nationals as a Contestant and not just as a Guest.

A MiniLak or a Mosquito would sure be nice as I know they are both
excellent fliers.  Oh, for an LS-6...

A good 20B would be hard to beat if the soaring is halfway 0E0 standard.
