11-13 year old competition group! Lots of kids running = fun. And see
any fat kids in this video? Of course not. Flying these totally open,
almost hand glider like sailplanes, for a kid, is a hellavu lot more fun
that being engulfed in a 2-33 cockpit. Cars towing, or kids pulling the
tow rope = low cost. Let's get real, you want new recruits, you'd better
rethink the basics.

I understand that in the Netherlands, 50% of the people under 30 who soar are female (and the other 50% are male!). Using a winch to keep costs down would also help.

Very impressive, indeed. Get them young! Love the concept of the endless cable winch for that activity. Sadly enough, in our sue-happy society, I can just see the lawyers lining the airport fence!
One correction, though: the commentator says that there is no other county in the world where a 14 year old can fly gliders. I soloed when I was 14 and did not grow up in Latvia and I know a bunch of other countries, where one can solo in gliders at 14.

In Canada, solo age is 14; licence age is 16. We've actually had 14-year-old U.S. kids come to the Great White North to solo because they couldn't do it at "home".

In Canada, minimum age Student Pilot (any type of flying machine) is 14. Agess for private licencing is under CAR 421.20 through 421.27, with a summary located here:

Age 16: Glider, Rec Airplane, UL
Age 17: Gyro, Balloon, Airplane, Helo

Yes, those 14-y.o. 'Mer'cans were flying powered aircraft.
