I'm hoping to visit New Zealand later this year and would
appreciate any information on the cost of gliding, i.e Daily membership
fees, launch fees and glider hire.

TIA

I went to NZ in Dec/January for 3 weeks. I flew at 4 sites on the
north island (it was raining at Omarama the whole time I was there.)

Tows are charge out by the minute from the time the tug leaves the
ground till it lands again. A bit unusual and slightly more expensive
than club operations in North America. Two of the clubs I visited
operated out of an airport which was controlled and had power traffic
too. There were landing fees at these sites. I bought a 3 month
membership from the Wellington Gliding Club for about $80 and all the
other clubs treated me like a member. From what I have read, you will
find flying costs to be similar to those in the UK. Check out

http://www.netlink.co.nz/ for more info

Have fun...and fly a PW-5!!!

The only commercial operation I know of where gliders can be hired and
launched everyday, and on site accommodation is available is with High
Country Gliding at Omarama, site of the 1995 World Championships.
Contact Helen Taylor and Richard Halstead at PO Box 81, Omarama, New
Zealand.
Tel: and Fax: 64 3 438 9621

Spectacular location, lots to do for family and self on non soarable
days, fishing, tramping, sightseeing, near the resorts of Mount Cook,
Ohau, Queenstown, Dunedin and many more places of interest.

Anything is possible at Omarama, just look at the number of World
record flights being made from this site.

Have a great trip to Kiwi-land,

The cost of Gliding in NZ is fairly low.

At the Club I belong to the Airtow rate is $2.50/per min NZ and 50c/per
min NZ for all the gliders. Normaly we do not have a day membership
(our club only) but depending how long you are in NZ for I may pay to
Join the NZGA so to always get club rates at clubs you visit. Many clubs
in the north island have a flat tow fee to 2000ft and about 50c/per min.

Average tow to 2000ft is 7-8min behind a PA 160 Supercub.

The club I belong to is the RNZAF Aviation Sports Club - Gliding located
at Hobsonvile Air Base about 20min NW of Auckland City. Good soaring for
being so close to the city.

Try http://www.vuw.ac.nz/~rajiv/gliding/ for club locations. It may have
moved but there is a link to the new web site.

It did rain a lot this year but I managed to get 73 hours in at Omarama.
Still I was up there for close to 8 weeks! And at least there was some
grass in the Mackenzie basin for once.

If you want I can mail you a list of what my gliding cost me this year -
in Excel or as text.

Phil,

As I'm looking to go to New Zealand in September, and Omarama may
be one of the few clubs open during the week, I would be very interested
in your costs this year.

How about trying some of the smaller club gliding sites in New Zealand.
We are situated at Greytown, 2 hrs north of Wellington, in the
Wairapapa.
Have you tried winch launching, very cost effective.
