For all who were wondering just how good it gets, check out the vertical
winds today at Jayton, just southeast of Lubbock:

http://oak.fsl.noaa.gov/cgi-bin/make_gif3.csh?Product=WINDS&res=60&dataset=-e+-h+phub1&Profiler=JTNT2&mode=3&periods=18&method=none&Ptype=Hour&qc=0&beam=3&duration=10

Just kidding, I haven't a clue what this means --

I checked the web site... these are NOT "vertical" winds.. but the
horizontal winds at each altitude based on Zulu (UTC) time and altitude..
measurements taken by Doppler Radar or other means.. they are "wind barbs"..
showing direction wind is "from" and the barb is speed... each \ is 10
knts.. a short \ is 5 knots.. and a pennant or flag on the end is 50knts..
note the bottom margin.

It looks like winds were 5 knts or less near the surface and east to SE then
south to westerly as altitude increased.. Winds were fastest around midnight
Z.

Take a tour of your local NWS and they can explain it to you.
