I'd like to submit some flights to the On Line Contest from See You.
I need a glider index for my SGS 1-26A. The SSA has it handicapped at
1.60. Is there a listing some where for a glider index or a way to
calculate it?

Hi Doug,

the index used by OLC is the glider-index of German Aeroclub (DAeC).
This index is a relationship to the ASW 19 (index 100). DG 300 and LS
4 have 106, Std.Cirrus and ASW 15 have 98. For calculating you set km
x 100/index. You find the complete list at
http://www.daec.de/se/breitensport/dmst/wo/handicap.htm. But I don't
know in what way these index-list is calculated. I remember that it
was a study of a member of a German Akaflieg.
Perhaps OLC-team can help you.

Doug,

You are pointing to a real existing deficiency of the OLC. The OLC
is asking you for your index, based on the glider index of the
German Aero Club, the handicap list. Unfortunately this list does not
cover all gliders in the world, but most of them, as seen from a
European point of view. There are no Schweitzer sailplanes on other
continents, as far as I am aware of.

Last year some brave 1-26 pilots, when flying long distances in Utah,
searched the index list for gliders with similar performance, like
Spatz maybe, and just guesstimated their applicable index (the lower
the better).

I highlighted that problem to the OLC team already last year, but it
does not burn under their finger nails. Lets say, you would fly a 1000k
with your 1-26 in Argentina, we would have a real hot discussion on all
glider forums.

Be assured, for ANY distance flown on a 1-26 or similar,
you do have my sympathy.

Cheers Michael

You wouldn't believe that the German Aero Club does not have a solution for
this problem, would you ? After all it's a German organisation. Here it
goes:

"The DAeC Index List does not claim to be complete. For the inclusion of
gliders which are not yet in the list, an application (in English or German)
with the technical documents must be made to the DAeC competition
committee."

This must be fun for the winter season...

Thanks everyone for your responses. I got immediate results from See
You and the On Line Contest people. They added many new gliders not
just the 1-26 to version 2.31. I wish every business were as good as
the people from See You.

There is at least one Schweitzer 2-22 in South Africa, although it is
not flying to the best of my knowledge.

Have a look at the OLC index again - I heard that a bunch of North
Americal glides had been added.
