What are the winter soaring conditions like in Florida? Can anyone
recommend a good place to rent a glider with the prospect of finding
some thermal activity?

Seminole Gliderport, Clairmont Florida, (20 east of Orlando). Soaring
can be very good all winter although days are short into December and
January.

I fly at Seminole Lake Gliderport in Clermont, Florida about 30 miles
west of Orlando. It's a commercial operation with a couple of L-23's,
2 Grob 103, and SGS 1-34 for rent. I understand there was good lift
with people staying up over 4 hours today, as long as the temps get up
into the 70's I have found lift. Our winters can have cold mornings but
generally the afternoons are pleasant and while there might not be
substantial lift at times we can always take a tow to 5K and do a
Florida Sled Ride.

In Florida's winter time, it's all about timing and luck. The best soaring is
often the day or two after a cold front passes through. We get a cold front
every week or two.

Check out the Everglades Soaring Club at LaBelle, about 20 miles east of
Ft. Myers (http://www.evergladessoaring.traditions.com/). We have a
2-33 and 1-26 glider.

Being close to Ft. Myers, you have the option to bring your family and
let them enjoy a beach vacation while you spend your days flying.

The soaring can be very good. Right now, the ground is still pretty
wet, so it varies day by day. In a month or two, when things have dried
out a little, we should have 4-5K ft AGL thermals on a daily basis.

Seminole Lake Gliderport in Clermont... friendly bunch, nice airport, this
time of year is good for soaring in Florida. Stayed up for an hour in my
1-26E without much effort on Sunday.
