ThSSA Sailplane Locator database allows any SSA member to see the internet link for your satellite locator device's map page or "share page". This could save your life in an emergency.

1. Log into your SSA member site: https://members.ssa.org/ Click "Log In" and you will go to https://members.ssa.org/login.asp?p1=/default.asp (maybe you can go directly to it with this link). This is NOT the SSA home page login! Your user name at this member site is your SSA number.

2. Click on "My Home Page"

3. Along the top, pull down "News & Resources", you will see "Sailplane Locator" with a nice red oval highlighting it, click this.

4. You can now see all the registered locator URLs. Search for your name or contest ID to confirm if you are there. Also confirm that your locator URL is correct and current.

Note that there is a link "For the tracker map click here". This is how you used to be able to go to glideport.aero, doesn't work now of course, hopefully it will be resurrected soon....

If you don't show up or your locator URL is bad, this is how you register:

1. Login per 1. and 2. above.

2. You should see your name at the top of the right column, and a few lines below that a "Profile" link. Click this.

3. In the lower part of the page there is a "Sailplane Information" section, and in there is a place to put your "Location Tracking URL". Populate or update this. Your input should look something like this: https://share.garmin.com/JamesHogue (mine, for InReach) or https://maps.findmespot.com/********** (for Spot) There is even a handy "test link" button, check this after input/update.

Now you can be found, hopefully!

Cheers,

Jim,

FYI, I tried to register, but step 2 "You should see your name at the top right" doesn't work. I see my name, but it is part of "Welcome, Richard", centered on page, and below that are only "My Home Page | Log Out". Clicking on "My Home Page" takes me to a page that the rest of your instructions work for.

One other comment: I do not have SPOT or INREACH, but our glider does have ADSB-out, so it can be tracked on FlightAware and other related services. It probably makes sense to add that information to the sailplane information page as well. I realize that ADSB is spotty in the west and mountains, but here in Illinois it appears to be quite good.

OK, I'm able to see the information and the tracker link is correct and
functions. However, the sailplane information is obsolete.
I cannot find any way to edit the info!
How does one update the info on this unfortunate web site???
Thanks!

1) go to your homepage: https://members.ssa.org/MyHome.asp
2) click profile
3) update plane particulars there
4) upload a profile pic, while you're at it!

Rich,

Good catch and good input, thanks!

I don't really know much about how FlightAware or the other ADS-B-powered tracking viewers work, is there a single URL which can be established which would bring up a real-time track of your glider? Just an idea, how about trying to put in that URL in the spot in the Sailplane Information section which calls for a locator URL. If this is just a data pass-through to the searchable SSA Sailplane Locator database, maybe your FlightAware/etc URL will just show up there, for all SSA members to see. It probably won't get you onto the glideport.aero tracking page (if and when it gets resurrected) but might at least get you in the database. Hopefully it won't screw up glideport.aero....

Then also send a request to SSA (via your Regional Director, perhaps?) to add another input box to the Sailplane Information section which accepts information which allows tracking via FlightAware etc. Just an idea.

How about giving this a try and letting us know if it works!

Thanks Piet, that did the trick.

For those of you using Spot, things apparently changed when they changed the mapping method. The original Tracking URL we all entered doesn't work any more and probably hasn't for several years. Ooops. You have to log in, go to the maps page and create a new shared link. I think I did it correctly but it was anything but user friendly. Make sure you check the link on the SSA Glider Finder page. Which should NOT be in the members only section!! Good luck and thank you Jim for alerting us to this problem. BC

Great, Bob. I just went to your Spot page from the updated link in the SSA Sailplane Locator database, and I saw a map! No tracks though in the available time window, but I suspect you haven't had it on for a while. Next time you turn in on (tracking), if you want, send a text to my phone and I'll take a look and confirm to you if I can see you real-time. Or better yet, send me a text from your Spot, if yours will do that. I'll look at the map to see your track. This would be a full confirmation of a good URL.

I want to be able to find you, my friend....

Cheers,

Jim,

For those of us with transponders and ADS-B, flight aware saves tracking info for a few months. For our glider, N40AF, this link does it:

https://flightaware.com/live/flight/N40AF

A similar link should work for any ADS-B out equipped airplane.

I poked around in the SSA pages and on findmespot.com for some time and
didn't have much luck.  Simply entering in my browser window:
https://flightaware.com/live/flight/N995J got me my last flight in my
Stemme.  So much easier!  Oh, and it works live, too!  My last glider
flight was a month ago.

Jim, et al,

This may not work at the moment when the content information as moved from www.ssa.org to members.ssa.org and security was changed. Users may go to glideport.aero and view the tracker. You may have to allow your browser to access it as it does not have a security certificate. One may login if you have registered there previously, but I don't think it accepts new registration or password recoveries because the e-mail function doesn't see to be working. I tested the e-mail and received no response.

One can also check the link that's embedded into the SSA Tracker (with the lapsed SSL certificate) and again allow the browser exception.
https://ssa.glideport.aero/app/gp/map.php?p=Country:US&units=imperial&lang=en&nomenu=1
After that, the SSA Tracker page will load the embedded tracker.
https://members.ssa.org/SailplaneTracker/default.asp?
It is capturing flights, I note 8H and SZ flew out of Perry today and there were 13 captures in the US and 1 in OZ today and a few yesterday.

Yes, SSA members should add/update their tracker links for InReach and SPOT. Normally changes create a push of tracker info to Glideport.aero. I believe glide port can also pull the tracker info, especially when a contest is updated. However, this may not be currently working and some debugging is being looked at. It was never quite fully developed. SPOT also made some changes, the SSA subdomain move, and GEOS satellite change are some of the issues, but hopefully the tracker data will be updated so it would be good to have correct tracker information when it's working for sure.

More to follow.
