As an avid flyer of both gliders and powered aircraft, I flew down to the
PFA rally last weekend, to find an excellent well-organised day with a
huge attendance, and representation from almost every area of aerial
sport - GA, vintage, microlights, helicopters, girocopters, and even
paramoteurs... with almost everyone behaving impeccably on the ground and
in the air. There was a wondereful flying display from the RAF, as well
as aerobatic displays, and even the Vickers Vimy and a Spitfire flying.

One notable exception was the gliding fraturnity. Not a glider in
sight anywhere, and no British Gliding Association representation. I
reckon that there would have been many converts to flying amongst the
visiting public, and there was a golden opportunity for some converts to
start gliding if the PR effort had been made.

Shame there was no effort made in this direction, don't you think ?

I suppose this should have been directed to UK glider pilots rather than
the whole world but I do wonder if there is a soaring representation at
OshKosh in the USA ??

I agree!! I was there as well (by car though), and the only
gliders I saw were on T-Shirts!!

(The National Students Gliding Club will have a stall there next
year....)

Come on now Mike, what do you expect from an organisation that does not
see the need for Email. It was hard enough to get them to buy a fax.

I must admit that I have never been to Oshkosh, but from what I
understand, for many years, Jan Scott was practically the only
one to bring a glider (his Minimoa) to Oshkosh, and he did not
do that every year. Some years he had some company, but my
understanding is that he was usually the only one.

Typically the SSA has a booth at Oshkosh, I haven't heard about this
year yet. I've also seen glider aerobatic displays and it wasn't a
Minimoa.

Member clubs and area groups run the SSA convention somewhere in the US
every year. Last February/March it was in Huntsville, Alabama. They
did a brilliant job. Next year it will be in Arlington, Texas, just
south of DFW airport. There is no equivalent of the SSA convention in
the UK. There is usually just a get together and dinner at an hotel
just off the M1 in Northamptonshire.

I was at Oshkosh a couple of years ago, it was an impressive fly in. There
was representation from the USHGA for sure (hang gliding), but
I don't recall if the SSA were there although they probably were since one
of the flying displays was a glider (don't remember the type) flown by a
famous german pilot (his name eludes me now, but I remember he was an elderly
pilot, having flown in WWII for the German airforce). I don't remember if
paragliding/paramotering was represented but there was a large ultralight
contingent there. It was the first time I saw the Swift, there being the
glider and powered versions there.
