Hi Folks,
Some of you may be aware of the 3d rendering stuff I've done over
the last few years (see www.soar-high.com) using 3D Studio MAX.
You may have seen some of the renderings in Soaring?

Anyway, MAX is a rather expensive commercial package and was
unavailable to most folks. To try to make this capability available
for more of the soaring community I've produced a little program
to convert .igc files into .pov files (used by POV-Ray, see www.povray.org).
POV-Ray is a freeware (not public domain) renderer that is really
very impressive.

I also put together a set of reduced resolution DEM (Digital Elevation Map)
files for use as height fields in POV-Ray as well as a terrain file for
POV-Ray that provides coverage over the entire US.

You can find links to this stuff on:
http://www.soar-high.com/soaring/3d/povray.htm

The BIG download is the elevation file (a .zip file containing over
900 .tga files, 33MB in size). This should be available on the 2001
PASCO CD (hopefully to be available soon) so if you have a slow
connection you might want to wait on it.

The instructions are a little thin as this point but I'll try to enhance
them
over time.

Hope you find this of value. I'll try to monitor r.a.s to answer questions.

Hi,

your rendered pics of your flights are great! I will try your program to
convert my igc-files.

Another intersting program is Cyber Flight by Tobias Witt: it converts
igc-files into vrml-files, so you can study the flights in your browser.
Unfortunately it's not available for puplic so far, but it will be freeware.

I have an alpha-version for testing, you can see some flights at
http://www.k6-team.de/privat/fluege/index-rechts.htm

If you don't have a VRML-Plugin for your browser, you should download one.
The Cortona VRML client is a very small one:

More Information about Cyberflight you can find at the producers page:

what exactly is the meaning of ``study'' here? viewing the flight trace
in 3d, possibly including the surrounding terrain?

what i'd love to do is to ``replay'' the flight in a simulator. this
involves not only conversion of the igc file, but also the addition of
other information, like heading, pitch/bank angle, etc. will have a
look into this as soon as i get flightgear up and running. (at the
moment it still hangs my computer :-((( )

set your logging interval to 1 second or below!

regards,
-gerhard

Yes, that's exactly what I mean. A green point simulates the plane on the
trace.

See my first samples samples at www.k6-team.de/privat/ (click on "FLÜGE"!)!

Hi Folks,
Just posted an update to the igc->pov converter.
http://www.soar-high.com/soaring/3d/povray.htm
Added mark points, way points etc. and user custom colors
for most everything.
