Define "best"... Best in terms of what?

You have a choice of civilian sims:

FS2000 http://www.microsoft.com/games/fs2000/
FS98 http://www.microsoft.com/games/fsim/
Fly! 2K http://www.iflytri.com
Flight Unlimited III www.flight3.com
X-Plane v5.31 www.x-plane.com
ProPilot 99 http://www.sierra.com/dynamix/pilot/
Airline Simulator 2 http://www.nomissoft.com/
Precision Simulator v1.2c http://aerowinx.com/index.html
Open Skies http://www.openskies.net/training/download/files.html
Flight Gear v0.7.3 www.flightgear.org
RC Flight Simulator http://www.pivot.net/~acarr/ron/ron.htm

Open Skies is FREE
Flight Gear is FREE
RC Flight Simulator is FREE
All other are commerical.

Yours to pick.

Flight Unlimited 3 went out of business this week. It has an *AMAZING*
Weather engine.

Microsoft X-Plane, FS98, FS2K and Fly! are open, you can add aircraft,
sceneries, macros, etc...

PS1, AS2, OpenSkies are for Training.

PP99 must use a 3dfx chip for 3D graphics
ProPilot99 went out of business last year.

Flight Gear is Linux compatible and provides the source code.

RC Flight simulator runs on a 486 computer

I have FS98, FS2K and Fly!

I really liked FS98 (it was my first sim) and the tons of scenery you could
add. (My absolute favourite being Norway!)

What I disliked was poor (standard) scenery textures, poor coverage of
Europe (although that was compensated by the freeware extensions) and
the very late appearance of runways when approaching an airport.

Then I tried FS2K which is definitely better in all of these aspects
but which strengthens my PC (PII-450, 256MB) really hard.

Then I came over Fly! for a really competitive price (about 10$). This one
was very instable but after the 24Meg update ran fine. I definitely like the
terrain (in the hires regions) more than FS2K. The panels are better, the
performance is better. The weather is much better.

What I'm not sure about is the flight model. Comparing the Cessnas of FS98
and FS2K to Fly! the latter seems to me very instable and nearly impossible
to trim for straight flight. When letting loose the joystick after a short
time the plane rolls to the right or left (even if trimmed as well as possible).
Does that mean Microsoft's flight model is simply better or does that mean
that a real Cessna needs this permanent corrections? Or does that only
mean that I forgot sth. essential to have a stable straight flight?
I tried all 3 trim axes already.

The coverage of add-on sceneries for Fly is by far not as good as for the
MS sims. And they need much more disk space (probably because they are more
detailed).

I am not really sure whether I should stay with Fly or with FS2K.

Carsten.

> Hi, Carsten, I have all the MS versions except 2000, I have FU3 and
FLY! FLY is the best for all the reasons you state. I too find the
Cessna much to unstable, I think especially so when you select bad
weather. I wonder if it's an attempt to model turbulence. The real
thing tends to roll into a bank if you don't watch it all the time, but
not that much! Use auto pilot, or switch to the Navajo. On second
thought, I always fly the Navajo on AP until just prior to landing,
pretty much for the same reason! Bruce

Taking "everything" into account I would have to vote for the Microsoft
sims......either fs98 or 2000.......they offer a lot of bang for the
buck.......
