FS2000 scenaery: what does "priority" mean?

The online explanations about FS2000 scenery are rather short. It says
that scenery is organized into layers and that they have "priorities" that
are numbered. I thought that this might mean that higher priority scenery
might be more detailed or something.

When I tried changing some number in the scenery menu list, some scenery
disappeared (Chicago had no more buildings) and I had to reinstall the
game.

So what is this priority thing anyway (what effect does it have on the
game?), and why are users allowed to change priorities if that screws up
the scenery?

Henri,
This option is for the add-on developers. When new scenery is added, it may
or may not need to have priority over other scenery. Most add-on scenery
will be 'local' and will have to be set above the global and regional
scenery. It is basically the same as FS98 in this area AFAIK. better
explanation Justin????

HI Ed,

That's a pretty good explanation. I'd only add that priority gives some
control over such things as exclude files and tile elevations in FS98, and
the FS2000 flatten and exclude switches. These things generally only effect
scenery layered below them. Thus, such things as floating runways (in FS98
and before) and duplicated objects can be fixed by adjusting the relative
layers between scenery areas.

Thanks Justin,
Love your scenery and can't wait for you to start with FS2k. I really liked
your WVa scenery as it is where I was born and love flying into all the
little strips not included in FS98. I see that 2k included almost all the
fields there.

Tucson Coyote here If I can throw in a question

Using FS2000 now as the base stock, I had a question dealing with the
"Flatten" mode of the scenery design.. From what I have heard and read on
the User Forums at a number of Flightsim sites.. (including Flightsim.com
and Simflight.com) that in the whole world there are only 10 "Flatten
Switch"

Exactly what do these "Flatten Switches Do...

Also if You are using Abacus's Airport and Scenery Designer.. how can you
implement the Flatten item in an exclude file (or is this something I don't
Know about...)

Justin.. Your call...

Visit Justin's site, he has an excellent area about scenery design using
ASDv2 (scenery FS2K) and there are a number of questions/answers about these
flatten switches.

You are limited to ten flatten switches per scenery area.

They flatten the terrain to a specified elevation in a specified area.

You can't. They are two separate entities in FS2000. Since the new terrain
is no longer section 9 scenery, exclude files and switches have no effect on
them. Exclude files and switches exclude the section 9 visual scenery, but
have no effect on the new terrain, just like they had no effect on the old
flat synthetic tiles.

The flatten switches are set by editing the scenery.cfg file found in the
main fs2000 folder. ASD2 can't do it for you.
