I have an IBM Aptiva P200 which comes with the ATI Mach64 3D Xpression
Rage video. The installation of FS6 also installs the (you're not even
asked) the Microsoft DirectX V2.0 drivers. These drivers often do not
work well with ATI drivers. Calls to both IBM and ATI last week
confirmed this. The ATI tech stated that while the ATI Mach64 cards will
sometimes work with DirectX V2.0 under certain settings, they (ATI) do
not yet fully support DirectX V2.0 - V1.0 is all they will support.
My answer to this was to install a Matrox Mystique 4MB card. The recent
version of this card ships with both VESA and DirectX V2.0 drivers.
Works fine. At Meigs takeoff with most options turned "ON" and sceneries
set to "dense", I get 20 - 24 F/sec for FS6. I'm beginning to enjoy the
program :-)
Good luck...

1.Configure FS95 so that I didn't have to be frustrated by pausing and
stuttering.
2.Configure my VP Pro Yoke and Rudder to work in a modestly similar manner
to the way they work in FS 5.1
With the release of FS 5.1, most of us began to build and create our own
personal configurations of Flight Sim, each unique in character and
content. During this process, may of us ran into all kinds of headaches and
misery trying to install that new panel, or new scenery area, or whatever
(you get the idea!) This was very time consuming, but is was well worth the
effort. We were building on a very stable and predictable platform (FS 5.1)
and knew that eventually, we would figure out just how to configure what
ever is was we were configuring, and all would be well in Flight Sim
Land....
Enter FS95.
On my Pentium 120 w/ ATI Mach64, 32meg, SB16, hardware, FS95 performs with
the consistency of a pinball ! I have repeatedly re-installed FS95 on
virgin installs of Win95 trying to solve the unacceptable pausing that
randomly occurs during a flight. A description of my debugging methods
exceeds the scope of this post. However, I have wasted countless hours
(since November) trying to fix what should not be in need of fixing !
It doesn't appear that Microsoft is interested in investing in the
continued success of Flight Simulator. If they were, they would have
re-designed and refining Flight Sim at its lowest level, providing new
features and functionality. Instead, Microsoft haphazardly patched FS5.1 to
co-exist with Win32, added some sub-standard scenery, and called this a
significant upgrade.
I cannot fault Microsoft in their rational. They knew we would all run out
and buy FS95, regardless of how much actually changed in the program, they
were right !
Now for the good news:
The commercial software industry has become aware of the large number of
flight simmers worldwide. As a result of this, There will be many new
companies designing new flight simulator software and competing for our
flight sim business. Throughout history, this usually means the consumer
wins !
In closing, I would like to thank Microsoft (Bruce) for FS 5.1. I have gone
back, and love every non pausing, liquid smooth, flight hour I log.
Thanks for your eyes !
