Current issue of PC Magazine says "Flight Unlimited" is the simulator
against
which all others will be judged.
Does anyone have any experience with that product ?

Thanks...George Ahearn

I think that's true graphically. However, there is a lot of depth missing from FU.
There is nowhere to *go* specifically; if you fly in any direction more than a
minute or so (literally, 60 seconds), the terrain repeats itself and you are back
where you started. There is no instrument flying, no real landmarks (though the
terrain itself is breathtaking), and nothing to do but fly the plane. That's kind of
the point, since FU is an aerobatic sim, but it still leaves me wishing for more! I
understand Looking Glass is developing a WWII sim based on the same graphics
engine, and that should be great. I get the feeling FU is sort of a technology test-
bed for their future sims, and in that capacity it is wonderful. I wouldn't say I
regret the purchase at all.

if you want to fly aero, this is the sim.
the flight model is much beter than fs5.

fs5 is better for straight and level, and if you want to fly cross country or
shoot approaches, stick with fs5.

I have a comment / question about FU:
While the graphics are pretty good, they are odd at times:
As you approach the runway in say Arizona, the black strip is all crooked.
It goes in curves to the side and up and down. It's very difficult to actually
line up with the strip on a landing as it always seems to change when you come
closer. Is that really supposed to be that way?

And no, I don't think it's due to my system. It's running on a P100.
Does Looking Glass technology have any comments on that?

Thanks

I think it is absolutely ridiculous that Flight Unlimited does not
have a jet aircraft. I'm not buying it until it does.

When you can identify an aerobatic jet aircraft regularly used in
competition I'm sure they will be delighted to add it to their
program. (However, I will admit that an F-18 or other smaller combat
jet would be a hoot with FU's flight model.)

Maybe they are not used in competition, as we know it from american
arenas, but many small jets, are used in air shows. Red Arrows is one
team, that makes a show with aerobatics maneuvers.
I think I have seen a simulator with Red Arrows, where you are 1 of
the team, e.g. wing man, and have to follow the teams maneuvers.
I do not know if it is out for PC yet.

I just got the Flight Unlimited CD for Christmas. Greatly disappointed to see
it runs in DOS and not Windows, but anyway. The scenery is tremendous, though
you are limited to one locale. It's primarily an acrobatics simulator.

Problem: My problem may be that I don't have a stick and must use the
keyboard. Pressing the down arrow key for up elevator just doesn't accomplish
anything. I have to sit on the down arrow just to accomplish modest level
flight. Getting anything off the runway's damn near impossible. If I had a
stick, would I still need constant back pressure? Seems like something's not
quite proper, and any advise (to this group or by e-mail) would be greatly
appreciated.

For Flight Unlimited in particular, you need a stick, a throttle,
and rudder pedals. This is an accurate acrobatic simulator
that requires accurate control inputs to do its thing correctly.

Hey, you got this for Christmas, just ask the "givers" for the
above for Chinese New Year which is coming RSN (that's what I'm
doing; wife has already preapproved...).

Hi,

I had that same problem with FU. Although I'm still in the
"poke-and-prod" mode, I seem to recall that tapping the key repeatedly
would make the control surface move to a more radical position, instead
of holding the key down.

I have a CH Products Virtual Pilot control yoke, and I
experienced that same lack of control. I'm pulling back on the yoke, and
I'm probably 10 feet off the virtual ground. I recalibrated the yoke, and
I'm getting realistic control input now. You don't have that luxury,
however, since you're using the keyboard.

A joystick would be the most realistic way to go with these
planes, however, since all of them really have joysticks. I sure don't
like the jerky screen update rate. Even with a low screen resolution,
it's still pretty clumsy.

Hi Mark,

FYI we will be releasing a win95 version of flight in March. There will be an
upgrade policy so current Flight owners will get a substantial discount off of
the win95 version. The win95 version will include 5 new airports.

What about us, the non-Win95 users? We would like to have new sceneries
too. I am looking forward to the new release anyway. Would like to see
more liders, more clouds, including cumulus clouds for soaring instead of
visible thermals. Thermals are nice to have but some people might prefer
clear skies with clouds instead. If someone could make it so that one
could turn the thermals on and off, it would make this wonderful
simulator even better. Thanks. Tom
