Welcome to rec.aviation.questions!

[This message is posted automatically every month.
It was last revised on June 11, 1994.]

The charter of rec.aviation.questions is:

*****************************************************************************
* To receive questions on aviation which might be answered in an *
* simple and reasonably authoritative manner by one or a few of the *
* many knowledgeable individuals we have on the net. *
* *
* Such questions, along with their answers, will be posted as a single *
* article, to rec.aviation.questions and will be cross-posted to the *
* appropriate unmoderated rec.aviation subgroup(s). This process will *
* avoid having such questions answered many, many times by well- *
* intentioned readers, sometimes correctly and sometimes incorrectly. *
* Interested netters will be able to follow up to the original question *
* and answer posting in the normal manner; these follow-ups will be *
* directed to the appropriate unmoderated rec.aviation subgroup(s). *
*****************************************************************************

Please note that rec.aviation.questions is a moderated newsgroup. To post
to rec.aviation.questions, you may either use your standard posting
mechanism or you may send mail to av-que...@peck.com. When you
post an article to these groups directly, the posting is converted into an
e-mail message to those addresses. This means that you will _not_ see your
article appear immediately. In the case of rec.aviation.questions, your
article will be relayed to a dispatching system which will forward your
question to an appropriate individual, who will then try to answer your
question within a few days. Note that due to network propagation, you
may not actually see your question and its answer for as much as a week.
At some point in the near future, once the software has been finalized,
you will receive an automated response by e-mail when your article is
received and forwarded by the dispatcher. Follow-ups will be directed
to appropriate unmoderated newsgroup(s).

There are now fifteen separate subgroups on rec.aviation; if the charter
above doesn't match the content of the article you're posting (or you're
following up), please consider one of the other groups as a more
appropriate forum:

announce (MOD) military products stories (MOD)
answers (MOD) misc questions (MOD) student
homebuilt owning simulators ultralight
ifr piloting soaring

It is not necessary cross-post articles sent to rec.aviation.questions to
other rec.aviation groups (although you may do so); cross-posting of
replies will be done automatically when the questions are answered.

OPERATIONAL DETAILS

The mechanics of this group work as follows. The administrator has set
up a distribution system which will accept incoming questions and
distribute them on a subject-matched basis to a designated group of
volunteers ("answer-mavens"). These noble volunteers may:

(a) Research and answer the question on their own, posting the question
and its answer to rec.aviation.questions and to at least one other
unmoderated rec.aviation.* subgroup, to which follow-ups will also
be directed.

(b) Forward the question to another individual for an answer. The idea
would be to forward the question to someone who has particular expertise
in the area of the question, typically an individual within this
circle of "answer-mavens", but occasionally to a known outside source.

(c) Decide that the question shouldn't be answered by an answer-maven but
rather an open discussion should be started, in which case it will
be posted to the approprate unmoderated rec.aviation group(s).
