Also, are there any rules of thumb as to how much insurance is needed?
Thanks in advance for the help!!

I would suggest going to a casualty insurance broker. Most will sell avaition
insurance. My impression is that both AOPA and Avemco are expensive.

fwiw, my insurance agent is a.i.g. in bethany, oklahoma.
1-800-825-2828
my current policies are underwritten by phoenix aviation in
dallas.
i recently had my c150 destroyed by windstorms. phoenix has
been very responsive so far, and i am expecting to receive
payment before the month is out. i'll keep you posted.
the only other dealings i had with aviation insurance companies
was after a partner had nose gear collapse in '93 (p210). that
particular underwriter delayed about 6 months before writing a
check, and only covered about 90% of the cost of the repairs.
i have instructed a.i.g. not to use them for any of my future
policies. i won't mention their name here on the net, but
it was another company with the name of a bird in it.
which insurance company you use doesn't really matter until
you have a claim. at that time is when you find out which
ones are the good ones and which ones are the bad ones. so far,
it looks like phoenix is really a good one.
mho,
john
