34 gallons (17 per side) in the Warrior II's that I rent. (This info is
displayed on a decal next to the fuel cap.)

Thanks for all the replys. For what it is worth. The planes I rent
are PA28-181 Archers (and IIs).

As I become more willing to ask these little questions that bug me and
forget about my ego online it is amazing how quickly I can resolve
this stuff. Thanks a million.

The Cherokee-160 (mid-60's vintage) I rent is 18 gallons per tank filled
to the tabs, 25 gallons per tank topped off.

It should be placarded on the airplane. I know it's my manual.
At the tabs you have 17 gallons usable in each tank for a total
of 34 gallons.

really? it isn't in there? now I'll have to double check my POH.
Anyway, tabs on my Cherokee is 36 gallons, total. Usable
fuel is less than that, and depends on the Cherokee model. On
my Cherokee, the unusable fuel is 2 gallons. On others, the
unusable fuel is less....

Only true for the 25-gal/side Cherokees (PA28-140 Cruiser, PA28-161
Warrior/Cadet, PA28-181 Archer).
The PA28R-201 Arrow has 40-gal/side tanks, with the tabs at 25.
The PA32 Cherokee Six/Saratoga is more complex, with 2 tanks/side,
100-gal total. An outside guage is used on one tank, sight on other.

Check the POH for the specific aircraft in question, any markings that
are on or near the filler cap, and if still in doubt, ask the A&P that
services it.
