I took off from CDW this morning to just bum around as usual and was
planning to do the VOR approach at FWN, when I climbed out to 2500, I saw
the smoke over the city coming out of WTC, I hit the throttle and went
direct to Alpine Tower where I joined the corridor, on 123.05 there was all
kinds of talk about a "commuter plane gone into WTC", meanwhile I was just
heading down the corridor and annoucing myself as usual, by the time I made
it to about Holland Tunnel.....
I see this airliner coming down in a bank, my first thought was, WTF is this
guy doing!??? Why is he diving so steep to take a look at the fire! ANd it's
an airliner!!! The next moment.... it hits the building.... I had my camera
in hand and snapped virtually a split second later after the impact....
Next... I didn't know what to do, but I headed out towards Sandy Hook,
called the approach and begged them for flight following, just GET ME OUTTA
HERE... they kept me on following until about COlts Neck VOR where they said
"unable" and told me I was on my own.... I tried to go back to CDW, tuned in
the tower... they couldn't hear me, but I could hear that TEB was closed and
they were about to get closed and told every aircraft to land.. gave up on
the thought of going back to CDW and landed at the first field in sight,
which turned out to be Central Jersey 47N, where a bunch of other awestruck
pilots where trying to get a grasp on what's going on.... After couple of
hours it calmed down and airport manager shutdown the place and gave me a
lfit back to Caldwell, where I picked up my car... the FBO was closed...
and now I'm just sitting at a Kinko's Copies on a rental computer trying to
get myself together and figure out what to do next. Probably just go get a
drink somewhere.
This is so f****ed up, I never felt so helpless, at some point I even feared
that people are gonna start shooting at any aircraft flying above them...
That's when it dawned on me to just land and deal with the rest of crap
later, which I did, I'm here.... I'm still sober...

You may well end up being the last GA pilot to fly the corridor. I suspect
here will be draconian measures now. Glad you're OK. And just yesterday
over lunch I was planning a trip with a friend up the corridor for Thursday.
I was telling him what it's like looking up at the top of the Trade Center
from an airplane. He was excited to go. Now what?

I could say _very_ close... could be as close as Harborside Ferry... I
thought that guy (I dunno why!) was diving down to take a look at the fire,
then I thought, shit his gonna get his ass in a heap of trouble for doing
that... the next thing... it flew it... It was a dark plane (sun was glaring
from the east) couldn't reallly tell, looked like a 737... I guess you saw
the footage by now... but I will have this in front of my eyes forever..
Dammit, I really wish I didn't go gawking at the fire, but then again... who
knows where would I be if it wasn't for me going flying this morning.

I have pictures in my camera, I was shooting all the way from about Alpine
Tower, all the way till the second past that second plane flew in, then I
just grabbed the yoke, shoved the throttle and hit it outta there, talk
about the pucker factor! I never been in a war, but I feel like I just went
through friggin' Vietnam...

You leave it wherever you want. I am a professional photographer, and Yury and
I have flown photo flights over New York together. Yury's photo may contain
some clue that could aid in the investigation--maybe a detail of a face in the
cockpit . . . who knows? My personal agony and shock over this event, as one
who flies here regularly, is no less because I retain my professional
objectivity.

Same here. I'm in shock today, like everyone else. We'll get over the shock,
though. Other enemies have made the mistake of underestimating our country.

tell him he'll get a clear view of Brooklyn? You are probably right that
this VFR corridor may get shut down. I just remember saying this to my wife
about a month ago after that guy dive-bombed his plane into his house in New
Hampshire: any nut could do the same thing in NYC. Load a Cessna up with
explosives, head down the Hudson corridor and wreak havoc. It will be hard
for the AOPA to argue for the rights of pilots when weighed against
thousands of people recently killed.

Unless they intend to keep a bunch of helicopter gunships in the air,
closing the corridor wouldn't change anything.

What this restrictions will accomplish ?! If somebody determined to
crash his plane onto something he is going to do it no matter what
restrictions imposed.
I guess only Anti Aircraft Gun's and interceptors could stop such a
person.
(Somehow I doubt it is practical to put AAA everywhere)
For there rest of the flying public this will be just a huge
inconvenience.
I hope that intelligence will prevail.

You know, anyone who is willing to hijack an airliner and fly it into
the side of a building is unlikely to be worried about busting a bit

yes, I agree. I think the psychological effect on one million New Yorkers
of watching planes fly along just above the rooftops is going to overwhelm
any arguments GA pilots might make, even if they are rational. Right now I
think this is understandable.

I think my comment was rational. I agree it would now prevent an incident, I
just think it will be impossible to convince New Yorkers that it is OK to
let planes fly down the Hudson for a while. Does that not make sense?
