An instrument approach at minimums, compressed into just over four
minutes. It's well worth the watch; I've seen it twice.

A turning descent into cloud near mountains?

Remind me not to fly there.

Sylvia.

What can I say. Our pilots are the best :)

A silly and ignorant comment, you're clearly unaware of the procedures
and currency requirements at Queenstown. Educate yourself.

Really?

Which approach do you think was being flown?

That's what you should be telling me, if you want to demonstrate your
knowledge. But I'll give you a hint, their final heading is northeast.
You should also know what the IFR currency requirements are for QN and
indeed also the minimum visual requirements.

But more to the point (I'm sure you've already looked up the AIP) what's
with your comment?...

What *is* the problem? RNAV provides for much lower minimums vs the old
days of VOR/DME nav.

The RNAV approach is straight from about 8 NM out. The approach flown is
a more or less continuous turn that breaks out perhaps 4NM from the runway.

You need to check the approach for approved operators.

PS: I meant to also add, how do you know that a "more or less continuous
turn" is being flown whilst in cloud? They could've done a Tex Johnson
for all we know. :)

I guess I need to add a +t for the pedants. Who knows what other typos
I've made, I'm sure they'll find 'em.

This isn't the approach for approved operators either. That one has a
bit of a kink in it, but is still mostly straight.

The pilot has flown the visual circuit in IMC. No wonder he, or she,
hasn't identified themselves.

Sylvia.

I know, right? Descending into the clouds with a mountain right in front
gave me the screaming heebie-jeebies.

GPS moving map with terrain is something I would not want to do without
on this one.

Have you flown it?

Even with all the procedures in front of me, *and* a moving-map
GPS, this would be a 7 on the sphincter scale until I'd flown
it a few times.

My concern is what you do when the equipment dies on you at a bad
moment. If you're flying the VOR/DME approach then you're already lined
up to miss the mountains before you're low enough to hit them. If
everything trips out, a max-rate climb straight ahead should get you out
of trouble. With the approach actually flown, the workload would
suddenly get very high, and that's when mistakes are made. It seems a
needless risk.

Sylvia.

Well no. I never got that far down.
Went into Franz Joseph as a PPL and Timaru as a passenger on a F27.
Do they still have that wire over the Lake that some-one hit a looong
time back ?

That was some very nice footage. I could have lived without the
less-than-constructive adolescent tripe following, though ;)
