My Elitebook 840 G5 is stuck in final step of bios update. It is displaying "Final Step of Bios update in progress" and constantly rebooting. Until this step bios update went smooth. I let it go for more than 10 hours in this, but no change. I have tried Power+Windows+B, Power+Windows+V, ESC while booting, F2 while booting, F10 while booting, disconnect power supply, disconnect battery, disconnect buffer battery, USB Stick with Bios update on it, but no success.

Unfortunately your soution does not work for me, maybe I miss something but I've done it twice. I don't understand what you have done to stop the bios to try to finish the update. I will let the cmos battery unpluged for a while to see if it helps.

It is a WSON 8 chip. Clip does not work with WSON 8.

The original Chip is demaged, so content of the chip is lost completely. I bought a same chip, but with SOP8 socket. I read bios file with CH341A with solderin wires, no short 100%, verified data ( from the another same laptop (HP Elitebook 820 G3), same motherbord number (6050A2527001-MB-A01), same CPU (i7-6600U) and write onto the new SOP8 socket MX25L12873F chip and verified with the dump was everything OK. But the laptop does NOT start. Power light and Caps Lock flashing slowly continously. How can I now decide if the ME Region of the BIOS are same? Or what can I do now?

In my case, for a HP ProDesk 400 G4 Desktop Mini PC with Ubuntu 20.04 on it, I had to unzip the .exe (7z x spxxx.exe) file and move the *.bin to:/boot/efi/EFI/HP/DEVFW/firmware.bin. I had to rename the *.bin file to firmware.bin. After restart the bios update worked. I should mention that moving the *.bin to /boot/efi/EFI/HP/BIOS/New did not worked for me. Hope this helps someone.

Note that this does require another windows pc to open the bios-update executable, but there is no need to install windows on the target pc, nor do you need a windows recovery disk or windows-pe or any such thing.

Use a separate Windows system to download the correct bios-update executable for your system from the HP support site. In my case the file was called sp95703.exe (HP Notebook System BIOS Update, version F.35 Rev.A).

Run the executable on the Windows system. Don't worry, it will not try to install the update, but it will open a utility that creates a bios recovery drive, as explained on the HP site. Follow the steps to create the USB recovery drive.

I had significant difficulty upgrading the bios. I wasn't able to get any of the other answers here working - many seem outdated and referring to old versions of the bios updater software. The tricky part with the network upgrade is that my computer is new enough that it only has usb-c instead of ethernet. Multiple people at HP support I spoke to said I would be unable to do the network upgrade as a result because it only worked directly over ethernet, but they were misinformed. Using a Thunderbolt dock did not work, but I bought a usb-c to ethernet adapter to try the bios upgrade and finally had success!

Some times there is the need to reset bios password, in order to be able to enter the BIOS and modifying its settings (e.g. to change the boot order). This BIOS Reset procedure on a desktop computer is a relatively easy process, because in most cases all you need to do is to remove the power cord and the CMOS/BIOS battery for a few minutes or to short the CLEAR CMOS jumper on the motherboard (if exists).

Updating the bios don't remove the password anymore, what a stupidity, when you try to update the bios with a new one, it's ask you the password from the Bios, it's normal as you try to update it ? have you ever try what you suggest ! i have five Elibook 820 G1/G2 and i can't remove the bios password that was putting by and old technician of our firm. Same thing with nive 2560P.

Hi, My HP laptop is suddenly showing message asking to enter administrator password or power on password. My serial is coming as i 59788608 after giving 3 wrong password. The code from the link bios-pw.org it not working. I changed my motherboard few months back. Is that causing the problem and can you kindly help on it

Anyone knows what may work on a zbook 14? I forgot my bios password after not having used my machine for months. Tried calling HP here but now their process for fixing this is replacing the motheroards at a high price!

Hi, bought my laptop 2nd hand, it's a HP elitebook 840 g4. Guy I got it from has no idea what the bios password is and I've tried disconnecting the cmos battery. Do you think it's possible to reset it or change it/find it out? I called HP and they said all they can do is provide me with a part # for a new motherboard.

Hello,

I tried all of these methods and none worked for me either.

Elitebook 8570w.

When I enter 3 wrong passwords it simply displays a strange on-screen keyboard. I never see the reset code.

I bought this PC on ebay from a seller who did not disclose that the bios was locked. They seller is a PC rental company who does not know how to reset the password.
