Yeah, I know what you mean, only I was watching a Dumont, but it seems the
realism and I guess the lack of innocence we had back then makes all the old
shows we remember seem dumb as hell. Jim Bowie, Daniel Boone, Tales of Wiliam
Tell, Davy Crockett, Yancey Derringer, Colt 45, Texas Rangers, Fort
Apache,Wanted Dead or Alive,Branded, The Rifleman, Combat!, The Gallant Men,
Rat Patrol,The Rebel,Gunsmoke....have you watched any of those re-runs lately?
They are corny as hell. My son makes fun of me all the time , now that I 've
showed him some of the things I thought were neat when I was growing up. In a
way it's a sad commentary on where we are and what we've become, but , on the

I'll see your Muntz and Dumont and raise you a Crosley.
Right..., although I heard a story that there were some early episodes made
(may have aired only on local stations -- I certainly don't remember seeing
them) where he flew a single engined plane, his own.
Apparently he then convinced the studio to pay for the twin so they could more
easily film the inflight stuff. Studio picked up an old T-50 surplus, and the
Songbird was born.
Probably why I am a pilot today. [I also had a crush on Penny, but that's

I think so too. It was a long time ago, but I don't think "Sky King" was in
first-run at any point in the sixties. Since the first Cessna 320 was
delivered in August 1962, Uncle Sky would never have been able to fly a

Airwolf. For the record, the original "chopper" show from the 50's
was "Whirlybirds."
A 320 was used only once during a tour in the early 60's with Kirby Grant..only
because the 310 was down. Not used in any episodes.
I had a photo of Mr. Grant with the 320..so I had to do some checking.
Looking at the pictures, it looks like the runway shot may have been
taken at Agula Dulce airport, or was it actually shot where the Flying
Crown Ranch was supposed to be (Grover, Arizona)?

The second plane, Song Bird II was a 1956 Cessna 310B, N5348A, s/n 35548.
The third plane, Song Bird III was a 1960 Cessna 310D, N6817T, s/n 39117.

Okay guys, I stand corrected on the Bamboo Bomber.
However, if you search the FAA registry N5348A (the C-3"whatever"0) in the
Skyking opening scene avi file on the website, it comes up as a C-320C, not
a 310B.
The keeper of the website informed me the first N5348A crashed (which was a
C-310), and later the registration was assigned to the C-320C. Can anyone
collaborate this?

"Sky King" had been off the air for years by the time the 310Q was
introduced in 1970.
I had the privilege of meeting Mr. Grant in 1976 as he visted a
fly in at Herlong Field, Jacksonville, FL. It was a cold, rainy
day, but he stuck it out and tried to spend a moment with every one
that wanted to shake his hand. I do recall him saying he was always
amazed that so many kids wanted to learn about flying because of
this show...and that he never did pilot the aircraft...he was just
the actor talent.
Penny, on the other hand, did go on to flying. The young lady that
played here part eventually became a flight instructor. As I recall
she spent some time in South Africa with her husband and the last
contact I had with her she was living near Bartow, Florida, giving
lessons part time.
Mr. Grant died in a one car accident on Florida Hwy 60 while travelling
to Cape Canaveral to attend a shuttle launch.

Cheers!!
It WAS a C-310 and I've flown it! A friend of mine owns one of the 310s
that they used on the TV show (they had a bunch). It's hangared in
Titusville FL right now. I'd give you his name but I don't know how he'd
feel about that. If you're ever at "Tico Airpark," ask for Bob and someone
might know who you're talking about.
That was Airwolf. Stringfellow Hawke and ??? Santini used to fly the
tricked out Bell 222 out of that volcano, but flew the Bell Jetranger for
fun I guess. I used to LOVE that show when I was a kid, but I grew up,
started flying real airplanes and helicopters, and learned about retreating
blade stall. There goes my Mach 2 fantasy chopper {sigh}.
I'd believe it except for the fact that the only example of the 310s used by
"Sky King" is the one that was never used in the filming and only used during
the tour in the early 60's and this airframe is sitting in Reno, in the middle
od restoration...and has been for at least 4 years.
"Songbird" was the name Sky King gave his aircraft. The first one was a
Cessna T-50/UC-78 Bobcat aka "Bamboo Bomber". Its successor was also
Cessna but I can never remember the model.
The Bobcat "Songbird" may still be around - I remember photographing it
8 or so years ago at Oshkosh. Not sure if it was the original or just
restored that way.

Yea, but Airwolf (CBS?) was a lot better than the Blue Thunder tv
series (ABC?). I think I would have rather gone with Cop Rock!
I remember in high school Blue Thunder being the butt of jokes both
among aviation and non-aviation minded people alike.
Never saw the original movie version, though. Is it just as well I
did'nt?
I noted there is an Airwolf newsgroup (alt.tv.airwolf)
Going back to Skyking, one time I almost did a version of him. I was
flying just south of Wilmore, KY (near Lexington) when I noted two
people on the so-called High Bridge, a huge Norfolk Southern railroad
trestle over the Kentucky River (at over 300 feet/100 meters over the
river, it's one of the highest rail bridges in the nation.) Even
though I saw no trains coming, I thought seriously about calling
Lexington Approach and telling them there were trespassers on the
trestle so they could call law enforcement. However, apparently the
sound of my approaching plane made them a bit nervous as they were
hightailing off the bridge.
Oh well, ....maybe another time I can be (tv) hero for a day.
George
The Bobcat seen at Oshkosh several years ago was Jon Larson's...it is not one
used in Sky King...Jon & I kept in contact for a number of years but no one
knows what's happened to him. The plane now is in his son's name.

The movie was pretty good, if you were willing to suspend your disbelief
a bit more than usual to buy into the plot. I had trouble with both the
TV series though, and bailed after three consecutive strikes on each.

Maybe so that the spar had a problem at the time, but Cessna did indeed
grasp the opportunity to promote their products by supplying the 310`s.
