While the Skyking tv series was before my time, still can't believe
I'm having trouble remembering what he flew. Seems he flew at least
two types.

Was it a Twin Bonanza, taildragger Beach 18, both, or what?

When the show started he was flying a Cessna T-50, later a Cessna 310.

He flew a Cessna T-50 and later a Cessna 310 far as I know. Name of
the plane was the Songbird.

It was good old Skylar King who infected me with the flying virus (also
gave me the hots for his niece, Penny). Every single Saturday morning, it
was the most exciting show the black and white Muntz TV could spit out.
Then, a couple of years ago, my wife bought me a tape of the Sky King
shows. Something must have happened to deteriorate the quality of the
fine hunk of broadcasting over the past 40 years. I swear, it was one of
the dumbest things I've ever seen. What a bizarre concept for a 1950's
cowboy series. Sky takes off in the Songbird. Sky spots bad guys down
below. Sky radios the sheriff. Sky lands. Sky takes off in the
Songbird. Sky spots lost boy scout with broken leg down below. Sky
radios the sheriff. Sky lands. Sky takes off...oh, you get the idea.
Still, it was the most exciting thing in the world when I was five. And
it has more to do with my being a pilot today than just about anything
else.

He flew two types of Cessna twins. The first was an old "bamboo bomber".
Don't remember the other, but it was likely a 310.

Yeah, I know what you mean, only I was watching a Dumont, but it seems the
realism and I guess the lack of innocence we had back then makes all the old
shows we remember seem dumb as hell. Jim Bowie, Daniel Boone, Tales of Wiliam
Tell, Davy Crockett, Yancey Derringer, Colt 45, Texas Rangers, Fort
Apache,Wanted Dead or Alive,Branded, The Rifleman, Combat!, The Gallant Men,
Rat Patrol,The Rebel,Gunsmoke....have you watched any of those re-runs lately?
They are corny as hell. My son makes fun of me all the time , now that I 've
showed him some of the things I thought were neat when I was growing up. In a
way it's a sad commentary on where we are and what we've become, but , on the

Right..., although I heard a story that there were some early episodes made
(may have aired only on local stations -- I certainly don't remember seeing
them) where he flew a single engined plane, his own.

Apparently he then convinced the studio to pay for the twin so they could more
easily film the inflight stuff. Studio picked up an old T-50 surplus, and the
Songbird was born.

Probably why I am a pilot today. [I also had a crush on Penny, but that's
another story. <G>]

Anyone know if any of the original cast is still around?

Kirby Grant [Sky King] was killed in an automobile accident in 1985.
Gloria Winters [Penny] did some work later in the 60's, appearing in
such series as 77 Sunset Strip, and then sort of disappeared. I can't
find anything after 1970 for her....

Joe is correct, is was a 310B...a 320 was used in, I believe, only 1 episode.

Emery Rakes is still living..he flew the 310 on some of the shows..I also

One of the 310s used during Kirby Grant's touring is being restored..this plane

I think so too. It was a long time ago, but I don't think "Sky King" was in
first-run at any point in the sixties. Since the first Cessna 320 was

The original Song Bird was a 1946 Cessna T-50 Bobcat N67832 (Bamboo Bomber).

The second plane, Song Bird II was a 1956 Cessna 310B, N5348A, s/n 35548.

The third plane, Song Bird III was a 1960 Cessna 310D, N6817T, s/n 39117.

The 310B has the unswept vertical tail, while the 310D was the first 310 to
have the swept vertical tail.

I believe the show went off the air in 1962.

According to Sky King Web Page at http://www2.dtc.net/~kvolgamo/sk.html
the 1946 model Cessna T-50 was sold in 1956 because of dry rot in the main spar.

Hey folks. I got one for you. This is a trivia question that I actually
know the answer to.

What famous lawman was Skyking related to?

Okay guys, I stand corrected on the Bamboo Bomber.

However, if you search the FAA registry N5348A (the C-3"whatever"0) in the
Skyking opening scene avi file on the website, it comes up as a C-320C, not
a 310B.

The keeper of the website informed me the first N5348A crashed (which was a
C-310), and later the registration was assigned to the C-320C. Can anyone
collaborate this?

I had the privilege of meeting Mr. Grant in 1976 as he visted a
fly in at Herlong Field, Jacksonville, FL. It was a cold, rainy
day, but he stuck it out and tried to spend a moment with every one
that wanted to shake his hand. I do recall him saying he was always
amazed that so many kids wanted to learn about flying because of
this show...and that he never did pilot the aircraft...he was just
the actor talent.

Penny, on the other hand, did go on to flying. The young lady that
played here part eventually became a flight instructor. As I recall
she spent some time in South Africa with her husband and the last
contact I had with her she was living near Bartow, Florida, giving
lessons part time.

Mr. Grant died in a one car accident on Florida Hwy 60 while travelling
to Cape Canaveral to attend a shuttle launch.

I agree. It would be impossible for Sky King to have flown a C310 Q model in the television show
because the show went off the air in 1962 and the C310 Q model was first produced in 1970; eight
years later. The newest model of 310 in 1962 when Sky King went off the air was the 310 G.

Actually, SkyKing's Bobcat is still on the active FAA registry. Replacing
the spar on one is not that big a deal, and their value now has increased
to where it is certainly worthwhile doing. I know a couple that have had
spars replaced and are flying regularly. Great old airplane. Wish I still
had mine.

It WAS a C-310 and I've flown it! A friend of mine owns one of the 310s
that they used on the TV show (they had a bunch). It's hangared in
Titusville FL right now. I'd give you his name but I don't know how he'd
feel about that. If you're ever at "Tico Airpark," ask for Bob and someone

That was Airwolf. Stringfellow Hawke and ??? Santini used to fly the
tricked out Bell 222 out of that volcano, but flew the Bell Jetranger for
fun I guess. I used to LOVE that show when I was a kid, but I grew up,

I'd believe it except for the fact that the only example of the 310s used by
"Sky King" is the one that was never used in the filming and only used during
the tour in the early 60's and this airframe is sitting in Reno, in the middle
od restoration...and has been for at least 4 years.

"Songbird" was the name Sky King gave his aircraft. The first one was a
Cessna T-50/UC-78 Bobcat aka "Bamboo Bomber". Its successor was also
Cessna but I can never remember the model.

The Bobcat "Songbird" may still be around - I remember photographing it
8 or so years ago at Oshkosh. Not sure if it was the original or just

Yea, but Airwolf (CBS?) was a lot better than the Blue Thunder tv
series (ABC?). I think I would have rather gone with Cop Rock!
I remember in high school Blue Thunder being the butt of jokes both
among aviation and non-aviation minded people alike.
Never saw the original movie version, though. Is it just as well I
did'nt?

I noted there is an Airwolf newsgroup (alt.tv.airwolf)

Going back to Skyking, one time I almost did a version of him. I was
flying just south of Wilmore, KY (near Lexington) when I noted two
people on the so-called High Bridge, a huge Norfolk Southern railroad
trestle over the Kentucky River (at over 300 feet/100 meters over the
river, it's one of the highest rail bridges in the nation.) Even
though I saw no trains coming, I thought seriously about calling
Lexington Approach and telling them there were trespassers on the
trestle so they could call law enforcement. However, apparently the
sound of my approaching plane made them a bit nervous as they were
hightailing off the bridge.

Oh well, ....maybe another time I can be (tv) hero for a day.

The movie was pretty good, if you were willing to suspend your disbelief
a bit more than usual to buy into the plot. I had trouble with both the

Thought you might like to know that the June issue of Private Pilot has
a feature on Sky King. They say there were as many as seven Songbirds.
They also say the 310D that was used for publicity briefly is being
