John Denver, G. Gordon Liddy, Kirt Russell, Ken Hamblin (Unassuming

That's all I can think of for now...

To the original poster: please post your results!

To Chris Fouguet: great book! When are we going to see pictures of the

F. Lee Bailey. About a year ago I saw an article in Flying - He's
ex-military and they got ahold of a Harrier or something, which he flew
and talked about.

I saw Clint Eastwood on a Larry King interview, and they spoke briefly
about Eastwood flying helicopters.

Football coach Sam Wyche flies a Piper Saratoga and appears in ads for
Piper in AOPA Pilot magazine.

Star Trek TNG actor Michael Dorn owns a vintage military jet (sorry,
don't know the type). I saw him being intervied and he was slightly
frustrated that his TV contract didn't let him fly it during
production.

Lavar Burton (also from STTNG among others) did a nice spot on a kids
TV show (can't remember the name of the show or network) about
learning to fly. I don't know if he is a pilot.

George Bush flew combat during WWII. Don't know if he kept it up
afterwards.

Colorado Governor Roy Romer is a pilot. Don't know if he has kept
current.

Last weekend I watched part of a segment on a TV entertainment
magazine show about a young female country music star (Lari someone,
I think) who was taking flying lessons in Nashville.

Lawyer F. Lee Bailey is a pilot, flies his own business jets, and for
a while owned the Engstrom helicopter company.

Pilot-celebs that I'm aware of:

Jack Nicklaus - used to have his own Hughes 500, registered N76JN
Arnold Palmer - Ditto, except the registration was N76AP
Christopher Reeve - Sad, but true. Reeve was a pretty experienced
instrument and sailplane pilot.
George Bush - Was the youngest Naval Aviator in WWII.
Murray McLauchlin - Spent a year flying around Canada in a float-
equipped C-185, and writing songs. Where can
I get a job like that?
Sarah Ferguson - Flies both helicopters and bug-smashers.
F. Lee Bailey - Yes, the OJ Simpson one. I recall reading
a book written by him long ago in which
he describes his part ownership of
Enstrom Helicopters.

Prolly more, but my brain is hurting right now.

Mr. Dorn owns a T-33. I happened to see it sitting at OAK's transient

Yeah, F. Lee Bailey has a gorgeous Aerostar -- sorta fits his
personality -- crisp, clean, fast & dangerous.

Christopher Reeve is also a pilot (well before his horse accident that
left him paralyzed). He owns and flies a Piper Cheyenne, the 400LS I
believe.

Hugh Downs drives a Learjet (at least he did with Clay Lacy for a 20/20
story, but I know he's a pilot).

Johnny Rutherford, the racecar driver just bought a Commander 114B
(N500JR) -- The 500 is there because he won the Indy 500 3 times, and of
course the JR is his initials. The airplane has a Checkered flag type
design on the vertical stab. There is a good picture of him and the
aircraft on page 21 of the Aug '95 FLYING magazine.

Rick Mears has/had a Lear 24. I saw it parked at AMR Coombs when I
was down there for the races a number of years ago.

---------------------------------------------
These guys don't fly but have neat airplanes.

Kenny Rogers has a Jetstar -- cannot remember the N-Number, but the last
two characters were KR.

Phil Collins has a Gulfstream I, of all things. Neat airplane.

Willie Nelson has a Lear.

Paul McCartney has a Gulfstream IV NXXXPM. (XXX I forgot)

Tom Cruise had a Westwind with a 2000WATT stereo system on board and all
gold fixtures and gold seatbelt buckles. A local charter outfit up here
in Chicago bought it recently. I heard he bought a Falcon 900, but
that's not confirmed.

Did anyone else notice this in Aviation Week a few weeks back: In an
article about General Aviation there was a picture of the Mooney Ovation
demonstrator with the sweet Texas flag paint scheme. The caption
underneath it said it was purchased by Whoopie Goldberg! Does she fly
it, or is she just using it for being flown around in?

Don't know how many r.a.m. readers would be interested in this, but on
MTV's The Real World, one of the flatmates will take flying lessons in one
of the upcoming episodes. I'm curious to see how the editing makes it
all look.

You sure Willie still has a Lear? A company I used to work for purchased
Willie's Lear 25 (N100WN) back when he was having all those problems with
the IRS. It was white on top, black on the bottom, and had florescent red
stripes down the side. Two winters ago, it slid off a runway in Buffalo
and was beat up pretty bad. The company has since fixed it up and painted
it all white with a blue stripe (company colors). It's based at Atlanta
Hartsfield.

It's a T-33 "Shooting Star". They are still used by the Canadian

No, he's not, or at least claimed to be a non-pilot during that show. The
show was "Reading Rainbow", which I think is produced by PBS. It was the
only episode I ever watched (after seeing an airplane while flipping
channels). He then went on to read a children's book about airplanes,
something similar to "The Little Train That Could". 'Round about then, I,
um, had to go do something. Yeah, that's the ticket. :-P

Does Janine Turner fly now. I know the female pilot who used to be
her stand-in for the flying sequences. Then they quite doing many of
the flight sequences in which they needed a stand-in.

Yep, but Patrick Swayze is an active skydiver ... wouldn't doubt that

Actually, according to the latest AOPA Pilot magazine, Tom

This thread started out by someone asking for the names of celebrity
pilots. Most celebrities do indeed have money.

And I, Allen Miller, currently making a lifetime-high salaray of
$15,000 per year, am a pilot. Don't own my own plane yet, but I hope
to take care of that problem soon, as the end of grad school is in
sight......Anyone whining about not being able to afford it just
doesn't have their priorities in order. Now I don't have a family to
support, I sold my last car in '89, and don't get fly fly nearly as
much as I would like. My instrument and glider ratings are going to
have to wait until I get a real job. But I don't want to hear about
how only rich people can fly.

There's a story they tell at CDW (Caldwell, NJ) that supposedly happened
there mumble-mumble years ago. A pilot is on final when somebody cuts him
off. He avoids a mid-air, goes around, then comes back and lands. Gets out
of the plane, and goes storming over to the other plane to chew out the
pilot who cut him off. Converstation goes something like this:

First Pilot: You stupid *#$$*@#, you almost killed me out there!

Second Pilot: Oh, I'm sorry, this was my first solo.

First Pilot: I don't care, you should know better than that, you *@@#$$!
Oh, hey, you're Johnny Carson, aren't you? Can I have your autograph?

I have no idea if it's true, but that's the story that makes the rounds in
the hargar flying sessions.

Swazee is a pilot. He flies out of Sunquest at Whitman Airport,
Pacoima, CA (WHT). I think his wife is a student pilot there.

In addition, Love Connection host Chuck Woolery, flies out of
Justice Aviation at Santa Monica. He got his instrument rating
last August there. I had the same instructor at the same time for my
private. His wife Terry (Chuck's, not the instructor's) was working on
her private last fall at Justice, too.

Let's set the record straight here...John Travolta (as any long-time
member of the Ercoupe Owner's Club knows) had an ERCOUPE as his first plane.

The club newsletter had a front-page photo of him with it.

From that point on, his selection of aircraft took a significant

I don't think so. I seem to remember an interview where he stated he was

You can add Jimmie Buffet to the list. He flies a Grummen Goose(?) and

Tom Cruise owns a G-III now and keeps it at Burbank Airport along side
Arnold Schwarznegger's G-III when it is in town. Arnold Palmer owns and
flies his own airplane, I think it's a Citation VII now. I remember him
setting a World Record in a Lear 35 several years back. Jack Nicolus owns a
jet too.

Merv Griffin is a pilot, owned a number of aircraft and an airline, Paridise
Island Airways, which also inturn owns Chaulks, the Oldest Airline in the

Kenney Rogers owns a Jetstar II and at one time owned a DC-9. Bill Cosby
owns one of the first G-IVs off the line and you'll know it is his by the
word "Camelle" written diagonally up the tail. Woopie would often use this
airplane a few years back. Oprah owns a Canadair Challenger.

John Denver is a pilot and owns a Lear 35 with a unique paint scheme names
"skybird" (If I remember right). He flew this with his father for a number
of years. Now I think it is mostly flown with a professional charter crew
and based out of Centenial Airport in Denver.

Tom Cruise is a pilot. At least he soloed. I was taking an instructor
re-val at American Flyers in Santa Monica, CA in May '94. On their
bulletin board of recent solos it said T. Cruise. I asked about that

Not too long ago he lost this plane (I think it was a Widgeon and not a
Goose) on takeoff off the coast of Martha's Vineyard. The media said that
the plane was a total but you can't trust them. I wouldn't be surprised
if it's being rebuilt somewhere. It looks like he took off and one of the
floats was filled with water. Once in the air he was unable to raise the
wing that had the water filled float and lost it.

The news report that I read said that Buffet was trying to take off in
high waves and hit one wrong; as you say, the crash totalled the
airplane. I'm pretty sure the report said it was a Widgeon (another
Grumman boat-hull amphib). He also owns a Lake Renegade. The Goose
is the airplane in "Where Is Joe Merchant?" I'm pretty sure he either
owns one of those now, or did in the past. I've never read "Tales

Bon Jovi is a band really (heavy metal) led by Jon Bon Jovi. They played a concert in
Newcastle (UK) during June, and they flew in on BAC One-Eleven-401AK N401SK (c/n 073), with
'Bon Jovi' titles. I would have thought that it wasn't owned by him, but just used for the
tour. He's also used a Gulfstream I on previous tours, again with 'Bon Jovi' titles.
It is unusual for 'big-name' artists (or at least those trying to avoid publicity, like
Michael Jackson, Hugh Grant :-) etc.), to fly in aeroplanes with their names written on the
sides. Of course for such egotistical 'stadium' bands like Bon Jovi, it's a necessary part
of touring /publicity 'equipment'.

Bon Jovi is the last name of the lead singer in the Bon Jovi band. That
should have been a G-I (Turboprop) and it is based at Avitat there. TTYL

I saw John Denver fly into a glider competition (he was the narrator for a
soaring video), in a 1939 Waco Biplane. He also entered the glider
competition. John has two kids that also like to fly with him.

Tony was at Oshkosh a few years back with the Lopresti folks, when
they were pushing the SwiftFury. He had installed a blowtorch of a
sound system in the prototype.

He's a very nice fellow; invited one of our party (not me, her legs were
better or something) to climb in and test-fly the stereo. She was all
set to buy the plane on the basis of having Tony install one for her...

Jon, by the way, is a fairly serious ocean sailor; he was involved in
one of the (Whitbread, maybe?) races where some boats got blown over
and folks needed rescue. Nearly lost a rocker that time.

Bill (sailing and flying go together anyway) Hopkins

(Other celebrity pilot I haven't seen mentioned include Tony Lema,
Thurman Munson, and Davey Allison, who share the characteristic that
they are no longer with us, but were flying to the end... :-{ )

Douglas was just riding in the JetRanger at the time, visiting a writer that
was helping him with his second book. I didn't know he actually flew. TTYL

A frequent visitor to my home field is the Formula 1 racing Driver

McLaren do car development at Silverstone and Cranfield is the nearest

Many thanks to everyone who responded on AOL and the Internet to my
celebrity pilot name search. The names are being used in researching
hosts for a proposed 48 hour marathon weekend of aviation movies on TNT.

A couple of notes on the list. It's a compilation of fact, rumor, and
commonly accepted myths about famous people who pilot airplanes. In other
words, it hasn't been cross-checked against FAA pilot lists. The celeb
list includes living actors, authors, attorneys, sports stars, politicians
and musicians. It doesn't include deceased folks, business owners, people
who own airplanes but are not known to pilot them, and regional
celebrities such as local tv anchors.

Thanks again for everyone's help. If I've missed (or misspelled) any
names, please understand that omissions and typos are unintentional.
