Here's a good one to start at:
Aviation Digest at http://www.avdigest.com
http://acro.harvard.edu/GA -- good general reference, includes pointers to
numerous other sites.
Bill LeFebvre (a fellow Rice alum) had a very nicely done unofficial
rec.aviation FAQ page, with checkride stories, but I cannot find the
URL.

Not too long ago I put together a rec.aviation archive web site. It
has all the stuff (well, nearly all) that used to be on my gopher site
(remember "av.eecs.nwu.edu"?). And I'm committed to archiving stories
as they appear on rec.aviation.stories, along with trip reports,
checkride reports, and any other thorough, in-depth, and informative
articles that appear on the newsgroups.
URL is http://www.mcs.net/~wnl/rec.aviation.html
If I have time I'll try to keep an up-to-date fly-in area, but that's
a *lot* of work.....
No pictures, sorry. I'll leave that to someone who has the disk space.

There are good GA and Air carrier files for the public, a good search
engine of over 3100 FAA documents AND also FAA files that are very helpful
in internal issues, BAT, BBP, PFS, and so on.
We have declined recent suggestions from FAA of "support" since "support"
means removing the most popular files. We were originally supported by PASS
however we became standalone when PASS set its own up in TX. This is NOT a
PASS BBS inspite of its name (WPPASS07)! We carry general aviation stuff, FAA
internal stuff, some PASS stuff, and now PFS stuff. All participation is
welcome. We have employees, and managers using it. Even the PASSOUTers are
welcme! It IS non partisan. The employee message areas (non private messages)
are echoed to the web for reading, weekly.
If you are interested, email or contact the sysop "Simon Wheaton-Smith"
an inspector in Flight Standards.
If you play the www, then check out "www.wppass07.org" which is open to all
people, including the general public. We have file lists, and links to a
lot of excellent web sites, and it is updated a couple of times a week. Each
new www we see mentioned is added IF it is good. We also have an FAA
employee web site and an unofficial PASS one, that all tie in together, the
url for employees is available from Simon.
We will be adding a poor mans Policy Subsystem to the www when we solve
some provider issues regarding CGI scripts. It is better than the FAA
Policy Subsystem, at least a number of folks think so.
