HI there,

I have a question

What I want to know is does all planes jettsion the weapon load before
landing on a carrier? This is because I am currently playing the HORNET
flight sim and very time I reach the last waypoint the computer will
automaticly jettsion all Weapons expect the wing tip sidewinder.

So I want to know is a standard practice?

Thanks

No, the USAF does not participate in the same practice the Navy does.
Instead the USAF has what we call "hot pads," away (minimum of 2000 foot
radius) from the flightline, and taxi/runways.

As far as snapping gear and having bombs "skitter" into parked airplanes,
the AF really doesn't have a problem with that, as we have dedicated EOD
(Explosive Ordinance Disposal) units at every base, and planes don't land
toward the flightline.

Hope this helps!

I recall that the max landing weight for an F14 (defined by the weight the
arresting gear can handle) is calculated with 4 AIM54s rather that the 6 that
is the maximum loadout. I read that this is the reason that you alway see F14s
launching with 4 Phoenixes.

The key as to whether or not weapons are carried back aboard ship is
the maximum allowable landing weight of the aircraft. If the designers
allowed for the empty weight of the A/C, 5000 lbs of reserve fuel, and
1000 lbs of un-expended ordinance, then that is what they can land with.

Usually max landing weight is some percentage of max take off weight.
This is why, during an emergency on take off, civilian A/C have to dump fuel
before they can turn around and land. If they didn't, they would be beyond
their max landing weight ( you never design to land with max fuel, its too
expensive in terms of A/C structural weight )

Hope this helps.

I think you're right. The danger of landing on a carrier with a full bomb

load and then having your main gear snap and smack a bunch of explosives all
over the deck, or have bolt rip loose and send a bomb skittering across the
flight deck toward a row of parked fighters is too great a risk. The missiles
are too expensive, and typically carry a lot smaller warheads than a typical
GP or cluster bomb; these both probably lead the Navy to allow missile-laden
fighters to return with ordnance.

The question I have is do Air Force fighters do the same thing? There's a

lot more room on a standard Airbase to recover, but still, it sounds dangerous.

In Real Life (TM), not bloody likely unless the carrier fighter has
little fuel left or is damaged. Ordnance cost a lot of $$$. However,
pilots hate to land without expending any ammo. To quote Capt Ralph
Hansen, A-10 pilot, 74th TFS: "There's nothing worse to a fighter
pilot than to bring home your ordnance. Nothing. It's an awful,
sickening feeling because it tells you that you didn't do your job."

Maybe there's a Hornet patch that fixes this problem?

That is correct, the F-14 can launch with 6 AIM-54s but can only get
back on deck with 4!

The max landing load is 4 x AIM-54, 2 x AIM 7, & 2 x AIM 9.

They normally are not jettisoned.

Hmmm... at US$ 1mill+ per Phoenix I'd have to have a pretty good excuse
to jettison 2 54's.
