There is a guy that comes around airshows, wearing an odd World War II-
esque grey flightsuit covered in WWII Luftwaffe medals, and a 1940-era
Luftwaffe pilot crusher cap. Each time I try to engage him in
conversation, he practically runs away. Currently, his autograph and
books are available online, but I get a little sick when I see them
because I know there is no basis for his claim of "ace status". JG 53
Traditions Gemeinschaft (vet org) has no knowledge of him, and author
Prien, the acknowledged expert on that unit, has found no evidence
that he served in that unit at any time, on any front, scoring any
victories at all. His modern day claims of two Spitfires over Aachen
and three I-16s (or I-153s) in April 1945 is both ludicrous as they
are unprovable. As one detractor has said, "He may as well have
claimed shooting down three Sopwith Camels - there weren't any of
those over the battlefield in April 1945!"

Another guy doing the same thing is named Rudat (or similar - very
close to Rudel) that visits Southern California airshows claiming to
have sunk the Soviet battleship "Murat" (sunk by Rudel!) as well as
other amazing stunts for someone that doesn't appear on any Germany
victory list. We had a similar fake wearing SEAL insignia to
airshows but the real SEALS appear to have driven him off several
years ago.

I hate people like this.

Erik Shilling had the same type of thing going out in California the
last time we visited with him. Some guy was making speeches out there
claiming to be an AVG ace, complete with medals; the whole works.
Erik was on a crusade at the time to expose the guy. I think it ended
up with Erik and Lydia Rossi finally getting it all sorted out.
It's a shame when people do these things but fortunately they are
generally discovered and exposed.

Then there was Mike Kowato, who claimed to be the guy who shot down
Pappy Boyington.

They both used to show up at airshows, selling their books and T-shirts.
Boyington claimed that Kowato was a fraud and that the Zero Pilots' Assn
had disavowed his claims. Both are now gone.
