I am looking for amplifying information for a photograph in my
collection. It is an Acme press photo dated 8-15-1945 and features
three "evaders" that came out of Occupied France with the assistance
of the French Resistance. The three men in the photo are holding a
100-Franc note, signed by leaders of the Resistance.

If anyone can find information concerning these three men, I would be
very grateful. I would like to know what squadrons they served in as
well as the circumstances of their shoot-downs.

Sgt Sam Dunseith (RCAF), of Woodstock, Ontario
LT William Bender (RCAF), of Kitchener, Ontario
Sgt. Emmett Boone (USAAF), of Port Arthur, Texas

Thanks in advance for your help.

OBTW, "Soixante Neuf" is the name taken by Allied airmen that were
rescued by the French Resistance.

Not to be confused with the more common "landing downwind"

Are you going to write up a little story
about these men?
If yes, please share it with us/me!

Will do - it appears that at least Sam made it into the modern era,
still working on finding him but I wrote to the man that runs that
website so fingers crossed!

My favorite quote from that wonderful site is the following gem,

" Nearing mid August one evening I was posted to lookout duty along
with another camper. Twilight was approaching when we became aware of
a strange commotion approaching from the southwest. Finally into view
came a confusion of men and vehicles in obvious haste. They were
heading in an easterly direction and left no doubt they were survivors
of an army in desperate retreat. "

"As we watched fascinated, from the top of an embankment, a different
and more ominous sound came to us through the turmoil. As it quickly
approached we soon recognized it as the sound of a heavy caliber rapid-
fire weapon. It turned out to be a Martin Marauder blazing away at the
retreating stream adding to the plight of the fleeing men and disabled
vehicles. The Marauder abruptly stopped firing and with a climbing
turn to starboard disappeared from our view. As darkness approached we
made our way back to camp with our report of these exciting events. "

What a surreal experience to witness. This reminds me of Johnny
Johnson's anecdote about seeing

We've had a cluster of earthquakes lately - two in less than an hour
today. As I was typing that note last evening, we had a little
trembler.

Back to the story :) Johnson found himself on a fighter sweep going
one direction when an apparation fell out of the sky - a mad Scot in a
Lancaster, dropping down to roof-top height in a solo strafing run on
a German road column.

Ah, the superposition was a little humurous. Here in Tokyo they rock
to to sleep....

Either his crewmates were Scots (and also mad) or non-Scots (and
scared of Scots). :-)

I was wondering about the location and then it hit me, I have another
photo from the same region. Its an Invasion-striped Mosquito bellied
into a plowed field which is annotated with "Bonneval" which is
literally one village away from Fretenal. I am wondering what
Mosquito it might be and the fate of the crew, since there didn't seem
any damage that would injure the crew. I thought perhaps they evaded
and were included in the Freteval group - seems likely..?

If you go to this URL you
can see the table of names in a more organised form.
I don't think the table will have the boxes.

That's a fabulous site, but the name list is very imcomplete -
Dunseith isn't included, nor are the crew of the Mossie, Cohen &
Dreaves. It did identify the crew and at least the pilot survived
into the modern era. Thanks again!

I appreciate both of you replying. Sorry to say, I gave up that project years ago when the trail ran out. Most of what you see in this thread and on the one website mentioned was all I ever got on the subject. If you email me I can send you copies of what I found - Gordon at Oldboldpilots /./ org
