Does anyone know what the definition of max. cruise speed is for a prop
a/c? Reason I ask is that some a/c are listed as "Max. Cruise speed =
X," while others list "Max. weak mixture cruise speed." I assume that
Max. cruise speed is achieved at normal (max. continuous) power
and a rich mixture, but I've never seen this written or stated anywhere.

TIA,

Guy

Cruise is the term for best engine/propeller performance. Usually
accompanied with "Cruise altitude". Max cruise speed is aircraft "Clean"
Well balanced, No trim), Light loading. Generally 68 to 75% full throttle.
You can go faster and or heavier, But it'll cost ya.

Guy,

Depends on the airplane. Most used what we called a maximum endurance
chart.
The 51 for instance had a high altitude mixture aneroid, and mixture was
automatic at "normal" through the altitude range.. The cruise charts gave
many settings, depending on the external stores carried.

The parameters given on the chart were gals/hr, rpm, mp, cas, and pressure
altitude.

Range could be increased somewhat by using low blower at high altitudes.

Hope this helps
