SR-71: Inside Lockheed's Blackbird - Michael O'Leary
SR-71 Blackbird: Lockheed's Mach 3 Hot Shot - Paul F. Crickmore
SR-71 Blackbird in Action - Lou Drendel
Which, if any, of these would come closest to what I want? Are there any other
books I should consider?
Thanks,
Peter (mi...@csis.dit.csiro.au)
PM-> I am after a book that covers the development and history of the SR-71
PM-> Blackbird. A search of the Library of Congress catalog gave the following
Ok, I'll throw in my comments on the ones you listed plus list some
other ones that I think give more details on the SR-71's development.
PM-> SR-71: Inside Lockheed's Blackbird - Michael O'Leary
Excellent photos with more info on its later years than on the
development of the plane, but I'm still glad I bought a copy. It
has one of the best color photos of an SR-71A cockpit I've ever
seen!
PM-> SR-71 Blackbird: Lockheed's Mach 3 Hot Shot - Paul F. Crickmore
This particular book is full of great pictures taken by the author
while the Blackbirds were stationed in England. Each photo has some
text but for the real meat of the subject, look for 2 other books by
PFC: Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird (1968) and probably hard to find. 2nd
and probably the best of the bunch is "Lockheed SR-71 The Secret
Missions Exposed". I believe it has a fair amount of info on the
development in the early chapters, but it has some amazing info on the
actual missions (well, at least a few of them). Also has many good
photos.
PM-> SR-71 Blackbird in Action - Lou Drendel
This one is available in many hobby shops that sell the Squadron/
Signal books. Quite a bit of info and many good photos plus the
author (an aviation artist as well as author) has many nice drawings.
It's a little old now but for a price of less than $10, it's well worth
it.
Jay Miller of Aerofax, Inc. has written 3 books (2 thin ones that are
out of print but still good if you can find them). His latest book,
Skunk Works, the First 50 Years, is the latest one book I know of and
it covers the development in great detail!! You can call 1-800-733-AFAX
for more info and also to order it. Highly recommended by the many
SR-71 fans I know, including me! This book also covers the U-2, A-12,
YF-12A, M-12/D-21, HAVE BLUE, F-117s, F-22 and some older Lockheed
planes that I can't remember offhand.
Now if you want a book that tells you how to FLY an SR-71, the flight
manual (minus classified sections/pages) is available, too. It's 1000
pages thick, full of technical info (but not info related to the
development of the plane). Unfortunately it's expensive: $100.00 each.
I have all of the above plus others. Also have gathered as many
magazine articles, photos, video tapes, etc. as I could get my hands
on. Some of these books may be found in book stores but the majority
are available from mailorder places like Zenith BOoks and Historic
Aviation among others. Need more info? Let me know.

That should get you started!

Those are all good, definitely must-haves for any Blackbird fan-atic.
>Which, if any, of these would come closest to what I want?
"Hot shot" is a photo book... "inside" has some text, but is also
mostly an (excellent) photo collection. "in action" is interesting,
with quite a few details even though its basically a 50-page "pamphlet".
> Are there any other books I should consider?
Sure! Perhaps the definitive SR-71 book is Crickmore's "Lockheed SR-71".
More recently he released "SR-71: Secret Missions Exposed", which also
has a wealth of information. The Aerofax SR-71 book is also quite good.
For all the most recently disclosed information on Blackbird development
you need to get the brand new "Lockheed Skunk Works: The First 50 Years",
by Jay Miller. GREAT book!
I have SR-71 Blackbird in Action and would thouroughly recomend it. It has
heaps of information going right back to the earliest SR-71 and interviews
with pilots. Lots of technical information and diagrams with it.

Unless I am very much mistaken, the book to which you are referring is "SR-71
Blackbird - The Secret Missions Exposed". This book covers a fair bit of the
development of the aircraft and has some great material on the missions flown.
