From what it appeared in the movie, the bomb was dropped at a very very high
altitude and the laser designator was a ground held unit. I thought that the
laser designators are only in the a/c itself.
Also could anyone post the Dimensions of F-14. I was just wondering how a
huge beast like a Su-34(Su-27) could land on a carrier and thought of making a
comparision between a Su-34 and a F-14 ( dimensionswise only ).
Thanks.

I don't know the exact dimensions for an F-14 but it is one BIG fighter.
They don't look like it but look at one in the hangar of a carrier or at
an airshow. You can really see how big it is when parked next to an F-16.

High altitude bombing is certainly not uncommon. It keeps the
delivering aircraft out of way of smaller SAMs like the SA-7 and
SA-14 (and Blowpipe, Stinger, and Javelin) which are more
difficult to reliably supress than larger systems. Laser
guidance units are carried by many Special Forces groups for
designating targets for both air and ground based weapons to
track. In the case of the movie, it made the actual strike
penetration much faster, as the pilot did'nt have to fumble with
designating his own target, so he got away from the target to
reduce his chance of being associated with it. Another reason
for the high altitude delivery. I wouldn't know about the
realism or viabilityof the paper/glycerin bomb casing though.

BTW, read the book. It's *much* better.

All the seeker needs is for the target to be "painted." Doesn't matter
where it comes from.

According to my Jane's (1988-1989):
wing span: unswept 19.54m/64'1.5" ('=feet,"=inches)
swept 11.65m/38'2.5"
length overall 19.10m/62'8"
height overall 4.88m/16'5"
