I recently saw the "Starfighters" perform at the Cold Lake International
Airshow in Cold Lake, Alberta, Canada and I have never before had the
pleasure to see a F-104 flying before. During the show I heard two distinct
sounds I have never heard before:

1. When the F-104's were breaking for landing a loud buzzing noise could be
heard as the were decelerating, what is this noise caused by?

2. When the CF-104, CF-104D taxied by it sounded like the sound made when
you blow across a bottle (a very big bottle!). Are the sounds caused by the
exhaust nozzle actuators?

A F-104 fan forever, Rob Forst

Don't know, if it was with the wheels on the ground, perhaps the anti lock
braking system was kicking in ?

Ah, the famous Starfighter howl ! It is caused by the cooling slots in the
inner wall of the burner can. At certain flow rates the air coming from the
engine core interferes with the air drawn through these slots, creating a
loud howling noise. AFAIK only J-79 types with a Starfighter burner can
fitted make this noise.
