Greetings all,
I've had a likewise opportunity to get up close and personal
with Mr. Jones' Fw-190 replica.
Just shy of two years ago, he was living in the Lake Wales,
Florida area and kept the replica hangared at the local Municipal
airport. Then an active airline captain, Mr. Jones was a friendly,
informative person and is justifiably proud of his creation.
In his hangar office, he had all the plans and specifications
to the replica at arm's reach. As I recall, it's a %75 scale
replica A-8, powered by a 300 hp Continental IO-540. The
airframe is steel/aluminum with aluminum skinning. The entire
project took some 13 years to complete. For some (forgotten)
considerations in the planning stage, the cockpit was relocated
some 6 inches aft of true scale. In flight testing, the CG was
found to be behind the aft limit (which made for an interesting
first flight, according to Mr. Jones). A 300 pound lead ring
was attached to the nose of the cowling to bring the CG into
range.
Jones said that the replica has a tendency to squiggle during
take offs and landings while transitioning tail up/down, but
otherwise is not excessively hard to handle and is quite
enjoyable to fly. Having shared the pattern with it while
flying a 1947 J-3 Cub, I can personally vouch for one thing:
it *is* fast. It veritably hops off the runway in 1000 feet
or so, disappears in a hurry and lands the same way. As
memory serves, the airspeed indicator redlined at about
240 knots and Jones said that the replica could exceed the
mark somewhat at full power while straight and level.
Until April of 1993, it had been painted with mottled flat
grey/green upper surfaces and flat grey lower with yellow bands
on the forward cowling and rudder. Sorry, can't remember the
unit markings. In April of '93, it was repainted an overall
light gloss blue. When I asked, Mr. Jones just shrugged and
said, "It was time for a change."
All in all, an impressive airplane built by an impressive
person.
Hope that helped,
AJZ
