I seem to remember a close-up of the windscreen area of an F-14 in the
film `Final Countdown` that showed a yaw string. Real hi-tech stuff !

The NT-33A variable-stability aircraft has a yaw string, by the way.

This brings back memories of RF-4C RTU. I remember the first time I saw this
string hanging down. It took us a while to accept it (being 2 Lts!) Made me
feel better after sitting the desk and getting calls in from others with the
same question about this string hanging from the jet.

Yaw strings are found on a lot of modern birds. The ultimate head out
display to ensure the bird is in trim prior to poping a missile or gun
shot. The B-47 also used them. A number of french helicopters use
the.

How about the F-14??? As I recall, that was a big deal: Hi Tech/Low Tech.
Well?

Hey Kirk, are you an ol' white noser ?

Yes, I was assigned as a PSO right out of UPT to the first class of RF-4C's. I
arrived at Shaw for training before any RF's had been delivered to the AF.
Then Shaw, Tan Son Nut, Alconbury and Bergstrom. Got about 80 Mach 2 runs.
Last flight was in '73. Then HQ TAC for 4.5 yrs, then ATOC Kalkar. It was
a great career. There is a RF-4C ( 64 1064) here at the Air Guard Museum at the Mpls
St Paul Airport that I may have flown at Alconbury. It has nothing missing and
is in great shape but would require a lot of inspection and seal/hose replacing
before one could "Kick the tires, lite the fires, first one to the runway is lead,
we'll brief on guard".
What's your story?
And what do you know about Reno's airplanes - how much longer will they keep
flying. I would think about a trip out west to smell the burning JP-4 again.
