I'm working on some family history stuff and came across a picture of one
of my uncles while he was in the Air Force. It's a photo of a group of men
holding a sign indicating they're Flight 4697 of Squadron 3691 (no clue
what the squadron did) at Sampson Air Force Base in October of 1955.

Anyone got a thumbnail history of this base and it's purpose? TIA.

Yeff; from 1951 to 1958 Sampson was the Air Force Basic Training Base
(like "Boot Camp" in the Navy). Approx. 300,000 Air Force Recruits
began their service there.

Chuck

Built by the Navy in 1942 as a recruit depot.

Sampson AFB was established for Basic Military Training. It was in operation
as an AFB from 1950 to 1956, it had been a Navy installation prior to Air Force
occupation. Squadron 3691 was a Basic Military Training Squadron.

Lackland was severely overcrowded in late 1950, many trainees were living in
tents. To ease the situation the USAF established two new bases for basic
training, Sampson AFB and Parks AFB. Parks was near Oakland, California, it
closed in 1957.

Look at http://www.sampsonvets.com/

The base was established in WWII to train USN recruits. Closed after WWII,
it was reopened during the Korean War to train USAF recruits. Starting in
February 1951 it served as the largest USAF basic training center until
closing in late 1955. The squadron you mention is probably the 3651st, a
part of the 3650th Military Training Wing. The basic purpose of the
installation (USN and USAF) was always basic training.

Miserable place during the winters which were nine months long. I went
through during the Spring and Summer of 1955 in Flight 4323.

A Google search for "Sampson Air Force Base" brings up dozens of
informative links, from veterans associataions, flight photos, wikipedia
links, airfield information, etc. I presume the veterans associations
would be your best bet

Sampson was a Basic Training Base - induction, learning how to wear the
Uniform, Marching, etc. - mostly for Enlisted Airmen.
The picture could be a bunch of Basic graduates when they passed training,
or, if there's a few people - Cadre of a training flight. (The Drill
Instructors, etc.)
Note that "Flight" and "Squadron" are standard Air Force units, even for
non-flying personnel or functions.

Always remember to close all parentheses.
We're not paying to air-condition the entire paragraph.

For it's mission of an ATC Base, it was shut down in 1956. Largely, it
is still under USAF care. Only two parts of it is used. The Navy uses
it for Underwater Sonar Center and another part is used for a Civilian
Park. The rest is abandoned.

Yes, the picture is in the 3691 Sqd link in the list of squadrons here:

During WW2 it was actually a US Naval Training Station carrying out
basic training for recruits. In 1946 it was closed and mothballed only
being taken over by the USAF in 1950 where they carried out basic
training for USAF recruits. With the end of the Korean War it was closed
again in 1956 before being taken over by the Army as Seneca Army Depot
until 1960.

So in the few years of its existence it was used by all 3 services

The few links I could find are

This latter link looks to be a goldmine and the book can be bought on
line in electronic format or partly read online
