The most recent issue of 'Aviatsi_ia i kosmonavtika' runs
an article on Lt. Gen. (ret.), twice Hero of the Soviet Union
Aleksandr Ignatievich Molodchii, who is now alive, and
after whom a Blackjack was (is?) named. The article is
signed by Col.-Gen. Vasilii Reshetnikov after whom another
big bird is named. Oleg
are you talking about the "sovjet"name for the Blackjack??
because when you talk about "Blackjack" this name is/was assigned by
NATO
Like all Bombers etc... NATO assigned names starting with B for
Bombers
F for fighters (Fishbed,Fencer etc....)

So, is that the generic name for the planes as in "there goes a
Moldchii!" or does one of them carry the man's name up front?
Walt BJ

Just read something about this in AFM... each plane's been
given a famous person's name.

No it is a personal name for particular aircraft.
Alsmost all Tu-160s have it. The common russian
nickname for Tu-160 is "Lebed" (a swan).

The names we are talking about are similar to the US practice of naming
B-2's after US cities - I forget the exact names - but such things as
'Spirit of Boston' etc - a name assigned to each individual a/c.
The Russian AF has now started to do the same.
They are naming their Tu-95 'Bear' bombers after Russian cities -
examples are 'Ryazan', 'Engels' etc.
The Tu-160 (NATO Reporting name 'Blackjack') has been given names of
Russian heroes.
I am collecting a list - but I can't find it just now !!!
From memory, they have used :-
Illya Mouromets
Ivan Yarigin
Mikhail Gromov
Vasilii Reshetnikov
And now - thanks to Oleg - we have another called Ignatievich Molodchii
I will try and type up a definitive list of the names - and who they
are.

I knew I had a list !!! Here goes ......
A/c number Name
01 Mikhail Gromov
02 Vassily Reshetnikov
04 Ivan Yarigin
06 Illya Mouromets
Aleksandr Molodchiy
Apparently 'Illya Mouromets' was painted on a/c numbers 05 AND 06 !!
Vassily Reshetnikov was a former Long-range Aviation Commander-in-Chief
Ivan Yarygin was a famous Rusian wrestler of the early 20th century.
Mikhail Gromov is a legenday Soviet test pilot after whom the Gromov Flight
Test Centre is also named.
Aleksandr Molodchy is a famous veteran of Long-range aviation who flew 311
sorties during the GPW.
If anyone can add more - or fill in any blanks, let us all know !
As for Tu-95 names - I have seen pics of Ryazan and Saratov and there are
others named after Blagoveshchensk & Kaluga with Moscow, Tambov & Mozdok
waiting their turn.
Thanks to Air Fleet number 13 for the information.
