The "hump" appeared first on latter E models, and is basically an avionics
bay.
The M has two distinctive outside visual differences: the canopy is
deeper, allowing
better visibility, particularly to the ground from the sides (remember the
M is a
Marines air-to-mud), and a projection at the top of the tailplane, housing
some gear
first devised for the Israelis. Also, like the Israelis, the M has a
braking chute and
more powerful J52-P-408-A.

The A-4F was basically an A-4E with the following improvements:
nosewheel steering, spoilers, an improved ejection seat, and the
J-52-P8 engine with 9300 lbs. of thrust. It first flew on 31 August
1966. The avionics hump came later and was retro-fitted on previous F
models as well as the E's and some A-4C's. About 100 F's were later
modified with larger intakes to accomodate the J-52-P408 engine with
11,200 lbs. of thrust.
The A-4M was built for the Marines and first flew on 10 April 1970.
The major differences between it and the F model were the larger
windscreen (same as the TA-4F/J) and bubble canopy, a self-contained
starter, a HUD, and the drag chute for landing. It also had the hump
and J-52-P408 engine.
Both models had twin, internal 20MM guns and 5 external pylons for
ordnance/external fuel tanks. The F was flown by both the Navy and
Marines while the M was primarily flown by the Marines with the Navy
acqiring a few old Marine discards in the 90's for use in the adversary
role.

The F was an evolutionary improvement of the E, though I can't swear the hump
wasn't put on some of the later E's. The M was a different beast, built
specifically for USMC use, with a higher GW (24.5 vs 22.5, I believe), a
bubble canopy, J-52 P408 standard with a self-starter (Jet Fuel Starter) vice
the P8 in some of the F's, larger tires, ARBS (Angle Rate Bombing System),
bubble canopy, etc.
