In regards the the USS Kearsarge thread, there was even a steamship named the
USS Kearsarge during the Civil War that distingued itself by engaging an sinking
the Confederate ship CSS Alabama off the coast of France. I believe that all the subsequent ships were named for this ship.

Incidently, i would not want to be stationed on board the aforementioned ship since the Navy nickname for the ship (for other sailors) was the "Queer-Barge". It would be interesting to compile a list of ship names and their nicknames.
Here are two to start out with:

USS Enterprise - USS Intercourse or USS Booby Prize
USS Pensacola - USS Pepsi Cola
USS Oriskany - the "O"-Boat
USS Constellation - the "Connie"

etc.

Others:

USS Nimitz = USS Never Missed

WWII Nicknames:

USS Intrepid = Dry I, Evil I

But my personal favorite is the USS Bonn Homme Richard, simply known to
the crew as the "Bonnie Dick". I heard this from a former F-8 pilot I
used to work with.

What's the origin of the name Bonne Homme Richard? I realize
that it was originally the name of a U.S. Navy ship in Revolutionary
War times. What I'd like to know is, who was this Good Man Richard,
and why was a ship named after him?

An interesting bit of trivia is that the father of Doors singer Jim
Morrison once commanded this carrier.

Benjamin Franklin was, apparently, enormously popular within some
circles in europe, particularly in France. As I recall the story, some
versions of his "Poor Richard's Almanac" were published in France,
and the equivalent of "Poor Richard" was "Bon Homme Richard".

It's been a while, and I may misremember.

Bonhomme Richard is the French equivalent of "Poor Richard." John
Paul Jones gave the famous ship (the first one) this name in honor
of Benjamin Franklin. The first BONHOMME RICHARD was formerly DUC
DE DURAS, a frigate built in France for the East India Company in
1765 for service between France adn the orient. She was placed at
the disposal of John Paul Jones 4 Feb 1779 by the King of France
and renamed BONHOMME RICHARD.

On 23 Sep 1779 Bonnie Dick encounterd the Royal Navy Baltic Fleet
of 41 sail under convoy of HMS SERAPIS (44 guns) and COUNTESS OF
SCARBOROUGH (22 guns) near Flamborough Head. After 1900 hours
BONHOMME RICHARD engaged SERAPIS and a bitter engagement ensued
during the next four hours before SERAPIS struck her colors.
BONHOMME RICHARD, shattered, on fire, and leaking badly defied all
efforts to save her and sank at 1100 hours 25 Sep 1779. John Paul
Jones sailed the captured SERAPIS to Holland for repairs.

The stats on the first BONHOMME RICHARD are:

Tonnage: 998
length: 152 feet (46.3 m)
beam: 40 feet (12.2 m)
depth: 19 feet (5.8 m)
complement: 375 men
armament:
28 12-pounders smooth bore
6 18-pounders smooth bore
8 9-pounders smooth bore

When my father was stationed on the USS Long Beach (1986-1988), he told
me that the Long Beach was also known as the "Long Gray Slut".

My .02 cents worth.

I thought the TR was known a "The Big Stick" - but that smacks of an "official" (acceptable)nickname.
My favorite is the HMS Bellerophon that was at Trafalgar - "Billy Ruffian".
The Leander Class around in the 1970s named HMS Charybdis was nicknamed "Cherry B" after a particularly vile bottled alcoholic concoction deemed suitable for young ladies. Speaking of which, "Bleak Blake" was Blake House, a hall of residence* for aforementioned young ladies attending an educational establishment in the Portsmouth area - the contemporary cruiser was "Snakey Blakey" because she usually had a strangely sinuous wake...

*The largely female population for Portsmouth College of Education was accommodated in halls in Furze Lane (off Locksway Road, near the east of the island, convenient for the Marines Barracks at Eastney) which lead to the saying "If at Furze you don't succeed - you might as well give up"....
