Disposition of B58 Hustlers
---------------------------

(Information from Aerofax Aerograph Number 4 by Jay Miller Copyright 1985)

Please note that given that the general disposition of these aircraft
occurred several years prior to the 1985 copyright date, very little has
likely been changed. Any additional information that I come into
possession of will be added and accredited to its' source.

I have more or less paraphrased this information - while Jay Miller's
entry is slightly more complete I have cut some things for brevity (although
you could hardly call this entry brief!).

Comments made by me are in []'s.

Disposition of B58 Hustlers
--------------------

Indeed an interesting history. One question though, local legend has it
that a B58 crashed near Langley AFB into the Plum Tree Island marshes, yet
it is not listed. Also, any net images of B58's available?

Yes! Thanks for posting the list.

The crash of 59-2459 at Carswell on 3/5/62 is a vivid memory for
me. The father of one of my grade school classmates was killed
in that crash. The plane disintegrated on takeoff in a mile long
fireball on the runway. One crewmember was seen ejecting at
zero alititude but unfortunately fell back into the inferno.

Here's some B-58 trivia for you: The father of a very well known
American singer was a B-58 pilot and he set one of the Hustler
speed records. Name him.....

no takers? okay, here's the answer: the B-58 pilot was Henry John
Deutchendorfer Sr., his son is Henry John Deutchendorfer Jr., better
known as John Denver.

Just an update. The B-58 (Greased Lightning) you have listed as being at
the SAC Museum, Belleville, Nebraska. It should read the SAC museum in
Bellevue, Nebraska. Belleville is the town outside of Scott AFB,
Illinois.

Ok, we go to the B-58 book and the record setters were: Deutschendorf,
Murphy, and Confer. None of them rings a musical bell for me.
There's a local band led by Wille Murphy, but that's not it.

I ask the wife, the bottomless pit of useless trivia, who goes " AHA!
Deutschendorf was John Denver's original name!"

Hard to imagine a more different father and son!
