Nimrods from RAF Kinloss have participated in the CNE airshow for over a
decade. In that time, they have raised more than CDN$70,000 for Toronto's
Hospital for Sick Children.
At yesterday's CNE airshow (which proceeded after consultation and with
the consent of the remainder of the Nimrod's crew), the civilan
aerobatic tean the "Northern Lights" flew the "missing man" formation
during the Nimrod's spot in the show program.
The Toronto Star said in today's edition, "They came in at 3:34 PM some
24 hours after the disaster, four planes flying out of the west in a "v"
and then -gracefully, almost silently - one plane lifting out of the
pack and heading up into the slate gray sky."

Was the Nimrod that crashed one of the ELINT versions?
Dan
No, it was a MR.2 maritime reconnaisance (ASW and SAR) aircraft. You may
be thinking of the R.1 ELINT aircraft that ditched in the Moray Firth in
May after a double engine fire (all crew recovered safely).

No it was a MR2.
A R1 lint variant did ditch some weeks ago whilst on an Air Test
out of RAF Kinloss. It was a succesful ditching with all crew being
rescued in minutes. There were just three R1's if I remember from my
"spotting days" so that would leave just two.

I'm being pedantic again i'm afraid, it was an MR2P - the P noting the
AAR Probe now fitted to all Nimrods (including the R1P's).

Are you sure - I know that the old MR.1s were upgraded via MR.2 to the
(current) MR.2P version, but I didn't notice any probes on the R.1s. Then
again, I was never really looking at the outside of the plane.
