Anyone know the status of the Affordaplane Homebuilt ultralight plans being
sold on the internet. My check for these was cashed months ago, but I have yet
to receive the plans. He has not posted any updated info on the progress of the
project and does not respond to email.

Good luck getting either your money or your plans, but don't hold your breath. The
May 1st update on Edwards' website said he crashed the prototype into a parked
aircraft while doing some ground testing. He's probably been sued and spent your
plans deposit by now.

I checked several online telephone directories, including Yahoo.com PeopleSearch. I
found no David Edwards at the address given on the website, which I presume is
where you sent your check for the plans. The phone number for the only David
Edwards in Riverview, FL, is (813)671-3184. If you get no response, I'd suggest
contacting the Consumer Affairs office of the Florida State Attorney General.
Especially in a state with as many retirees (potential victims of those who attempt
to defraud the elderly) as Florida has, they won't be interested in pursuing the
case, but it can't hurt to have your complaint on file.

The homebuilt aircraft movement, with all its hopes and dreams, has had more than
its share of folks promising great things, taking other folks' money, and never
delivering. People on this newsgroup have had more than their share of money taken.
I continue to be amazed that people still send money to those who promise the sky
but haven't even flown their prototype yet (scary enough when they're sending it to
someone like Lance Niebauer, who has successfully developed several aircraft and
has the backing of a successful corporation).

I'm sure there are others around here who would like to hear anything you learn!

He has posted two updates on his list. He doesn't respond to email.

Ron, He is supposed to be posting pictures and an updated report to the
website this week. His last post on the list reported that he had made some
changes to the plane and would be test flying this week. He also reported
that he was just getting over a bout with the flu. Don't give up, no one has
received plans yet and won't until after the test flights are complete. I'm
also waiting for the plans to come out, as are a lot of people. Dean

Sorry to hear about your bad experience with the afford-a-plane.
I also gave the plane "a look", ended up ordering the plans for
the Legal Eagle which I am happily building now. Also Mr.
Milholland, the designer, is prompt and helpful when you call.
And, it's a much nicer looking airplane.

Is there a web site that has a picture of this. My search turned up nothing.

I just ordered and received plans for the Legal Eagle UL. It took about a
week to turn around. The quality of this high wing 3 axis UL is very good
and for an extra $20 you can get plans for the 1/2 VW engine for the Eagle.

If you're looking for a neat design (it even looks like the Affordable ...)
with fast turn around give the Eagle a look at...

The designer is Leonard Milholand. And he's in the phone book.

Definately go with the Legal Eagle . I saw both planes at Sun n Fun this year
and the Eagle is a much better design. The tail section of the Affordaplane is
way too flexy and the guy just cut way too many corners to keep the price down.
I got my plans for the Eagle a month or so ago and have started building the
fuselage and wings. Dan who posted earlier in this thread is farther along
than I am and has been very helpful to me . So has Mr Millholand for that
matter. I would be happy to exchange info and help anyone that wants to drop me
a line.

I looked at the Affordaplane as my entry level project into the
homebuilder arena, but who in their right mind wants to trust their
life, shell out all those bucks, spend all the hours, etc., on a design
that hasn't even been flight tested yet?

So after doing a good amount of looking around, I ordered the Legal
Eagle plans this week. As this is my first homebuilt, I'm anxious to
talk to any other LE builders.

How did you find the quality of the plans? Have you encountered any
real problems? I was also curious about the fuselage welding, do the
plans call for/require TIG welding or what?

The Legal Eagle looks like a great little airplane. Does anyone know of
a list or forum for LE builders out there? If not let's start one!

Happy building,

Tim

I think the plans call for welding the fuselage with any type welding you're
comfortable with. TIG is not required but here's a thought if you're a
little shaky. If you rent a gas rig and tack the whole fuselage together
then you can take it to a certified welder to finish up and feel much better
about it.

Wings are wood, tail is pop riveted aluminum, so little welding after the
frame.

As I've never sat in one of these, I intend on building a mockup of the
cabin area to see how it fits. The plans suggest adjusting things to fit.
In fact Mr Millholand said he had to move the seat back.

The plans are adequate. Let's face it, this is not a complicated plane.
Suggest you order the video if you'd like some help.

The idea of a list is a good one and I'd be happy to register one. Just one
thing, please leave bad feelings at the keyboard. Go to

I bought the LE plans about a year ago, and was all set to start working on
one. I showed the plans to a friend of mine who is an aeronautical engineer
and he expressed some real concerns about the planes structural integrity.
Now maybe he just doesn't like the plane, but the technobabble that he
spewed forth sounded like it made sense. Of course since I'm not an engineer
( well not yet ) I felt that maybe I should take his concerns seriously, I
did however decide to do the fuse and wing as a 3D model so I could send it
to a friend of mine for finite element analysis on the structure, but do to
a busy summer semester schedule at school I haven't had the time to get it
to him. Of course if I could afford the $8000 program I could do it myself,
but I can't seem to remember where I laid that extra $8000, I know it's
laying around here somewhere.
