Anybody have any suggestions for software that would help design a
paint scheme for a homebuilt? The plane is a Murphy Rebel. I am not
an artistic type and am having trouble coming up with something that
I like. Paper drawings just aren't working for me.

Walt,

Why don't you ask for designs and offer some time in the airplane to the
winner? You could mail a line drawing to those interested and they could
return it with their ideas.

Wlater Hi, Try using Corel Draw to do this . I have had very good luck
doing so to design the paint scheme for my plane. I used some of the
airplane that come on the CD of Corel Draw 6.0 and filled them with color I
wanted. It will help a lot if you have a color printer, you will feel very
good about your design work.
good luck

I tried designing a paint scheme for a Kitfox using Aldus/Adobe Freehand.
I traced the line drawing supplied by Skystar and went from there.

I didn't find it easy going. The tool is a bit complex, and I didn't
learn it thoroughly before starting. I did get some results, but I have
heard Corel is easier. If I were going to do it again, I would try
that.

Give a thought to using the designs in the model airplane mags.

I scanned in the line drawing from the bluprint booklet into a program called Hi Jack
Pro, converted the format to BMP then moved it to the windows paint program. Corrected a
few line gliches then laid in the color. Worked well enough.

The best I have seen was when they scanned a photo of the plane, in white base coat,
then applied the color in Corel Draw. The resulting printout looked like a photo of the
plane after the paint job.

Of course, you could always xerox your three views and go buy the big box
of crayons.

That is precisely what I did in selecting the color pattern for my Stits
Playmate. Ended up with a book full of colored three views, then picked
my favorite. Old fashioned, not high tech, but simple and quick.

I wondered about building up a simple 3D model of the aircraft and
feeding it into a raytracer such as Persistence of Vision (POV). That
should give a much more photo-realistic view of the aircraft, and from
any angle. Probably take some effort to build up the model in the first
place.

Another possibility, for those with MS Flight Sim and Flight Shop, is to
use those programs to design and preview a paint job. I believe some
people have tried this with RV-6s (someone has already designed an RV-6
aircraft for MSFS & FS).

Another method, and the one I used, is to scan a three view drawing into
your computer, then use something like Microsoft paint to render your
drawings. Printed on a color printer, it's nicer than crayons and lower
tech (read: cheaper) than the high priced draw software. (Plus it's easier
to add missles and bombs and stuff - just for fun). :)

beat me to the gun.
charlie was showing me some .jpg files of stunters from around the world
the other night. among the group was the most striking paint scheme I've
seen in ages. if AIDS doesnt kill me (Aviation Induced Divorce Syndrome)
the paint scheme is a certainty for my homebuilt.

Control Line Stunters, that's where to look.
